I'm getting the blinking red light now and this is a launch model version. I got it the first day. I rarely played but recently I've been playing MK demo and now my ps3 died.

What I am wondering now is if I were to send it in, are they going to send me the newer slim models or the older ones I'm assuming without BC.

Your SOL. Sell it on ebay, maybe you'll get $50 for it. Never ever purchase a console at launch. My ps3 slim may be louder and look less appealling than the fatty but it works and is $300 cheaper than those faulty launch consoles.

How do you know all launch models are faulty? What if we start seeing threads about people's Slims dying out 1 or 2 years from now?

I'm sorry to hear it mate, I have had my launch 60GB model stopped reading blu-ray disk last year but I sent it for repairs (170$) and continue to use it to this day.

You don't have to get a Slim if you don't want to, especially if you're using PS2 games on it. Repair it, for me personally, it's still the best, complete package PS3 from all of the versions released. ;)

I think the 60 GB PS3 is the best PS3, even better than the slim.

And how do you know yours is quieter than a phat? I have owned both and can safely say the phat is way louder.

The fat PS3 sounds like a chopper. I really don't see how anyone can watch movies with the fat being so loud. I went to my friends' houses and they all have very loud fat PS3s. My slim ps3 is pretty much silent. The slim doesn't have to work as hard as the fat ps3 because they really improved the electricity usage and fan for the slim.

Encouraging people to never purchase a console at launch is bad for the success of a console.

I have had my fat ps3 60gb since launch date in uk,never ever had a problem with it,just bought a 160gb slim the other day and can honestly say both make some noises none louder than the other IMO.The thing i like about the slim is that it has buttons insted of they sensers for ejecting and on off.

Jak-25

I bought my 60GB on UK launch and used it without problems, apart from an ocassinal freeze up.

But after 2 years of use,i began reading more and more postings of peoples 60GBs YLOD,so i sold mine and now very happy with my 120GB Slim, which runs much cooler and quieter than my original 60GB.

It would be interesting to know exactly how many 60GBs are still operational as you can look on ebay at any time and see it's littered with broken "Fat" 60s,40s and 80s.

Probrably,if you've still got one that works, from launch, then you probrably never used it that often?

I got mine in septemeber 07. I use it from time to time. When I said it was the best PS3, I was talking about the features, not reliability. I have noticed lots of people's 60 gb PS3 breaking, which sucks. I just don't really want the slim because they don't have backwards compatiblity. It really is an important feature to me as I play PS2 and PS3 games quite often. If Sony had kept it in there than I would have wanted one.

While I had an xbox 360, I barely played my playstation 3. And then once my xbox 360 RROD, after I got a refurbed model from MS, I sold it and decided to just stick with Sony. It sucks that it finally YLOD. Sometimes there were months where I didn't even touch and others where I would play it for 5-6 hours at a time until I finished a game. If it weren't for the bluray and having a few games already on the PS3, I would go back to getting the xbox 360 slim, but that's for another forum. I'll probably buy a slim version sometime before april 18 so I can play mk9.

Only now?!? Mine died more than a year ago. Mine was 60 gig as well, very close to launch date (about 2 weeks or so). Anyway, I sent mine in to sony to get it fixed, and it broke down 4 months later (right after the 3 month warrenty...how convenient for sony). DONT make the same mistake i did, and instead buy a more reliable ps3 slim! Shouldve done that from the start. I still have my 60 gig, but im getting it refurbished down the road. Good luck! REMEMBER: dont get it refurbished just yet, just get a slim!

Yes, so true. The 60 gig is the best! No doubt. I loved mine to death, but getting it refurbished by sony is not an option since it breaks down 4 months later. Once again, i suggest people who have their FAT ps3's broken down should get a slim than have it refurbished. Even people who make youtube tutorials on how ot fix fat ps3's from their YLOD suggest that it's better to get the new slim (it just lasts longer, thats all...) than to fix it again manually or by sony!

lol yeah, sending it to Sony is not an option if mine breaks. I just wish the slims had backwards compatiblity.

Email Sony to see if they are still offering the swap/fix & current cost.

Swap/Fix was: 1. send fat ps3 to sony, 2. get your system fixed or refurb of same model for $180 (fix or refurb is at Sonys discretion), OR 3. get refurb 120gb slim ps3 for $150.

Keep in mind every system sent to Sony gets reformatted (Sony= lose info/memory) & Sony only offers 3 months warranty.

You do have other options, I had my 60gb fat fixed by gophermods ($70 fix + $30 for 6 month warranty, no lost info/memory). Fix was great & fat worked, but when my GPU completely fried (5 1/2 months later) gophermods refunded the complete fix/warranty $$$. I then sent to Sony & swapped for 120gb slim.

My slim is quieter than fat ever was. But slim can't play ps2s, no biggie cause I have 2 ps2s.

Yeah right? I wouldn't be surprised. It's ridiculous how the early adopters get shafted IMO..
