I'm thinking of getting a 80GB PS3. It says you can play PS2/PS1 games through software emulation. I heard the old PS3 models can play PS2/PS1 games right off the bat since it already had the Emotion Engine chip in it. And the newer models don't have that. What's software emulation? Can I still get my old PS2/PS1 games and still play on the newer 80GB model? And does it play well? Sorry, I'm a n00b.

if newer you mean the MGS Edition PS3, then yeah, rumors has it that model will be shipped carrying the emotion chip. however, the 80gb that are out now being sold with Motorstorm are built with a software emulator which only means, you can play about 80 to 85% of your ps2 games, I believe all models play ps1 games 100 percent..hey if you got the money now, why not buy it now, if not wait for the MGS PS3...

The quality of PS1/2 games are the same for the older PS3s with the emotion engine and the new 80gb models with software emulation. The 80gb will upscale PS2 games and dvd movies and they both look fantastic. Backwards compatibility is roughly 85% with the 80gb. Most, if not all of the major franchises are playable with the 80gb. I haven't heard of any complaints so far with any PS3 (except for the 40gb which has no BC).

i think the only drawback from software emulation to hardware emulation is 1) 60gb has almost near perfect compatibility where as even though the 80gb does support a good amount of games, theres reported issues about the framerates, that theres slowdowns for curtain games.

It's probably the same system, just bundle with MGS4 and the Duel Shock 3 Controller. I don't think they'll upgrade the 80 gig, that will cost more money.

Only 80-85%? Dang, that sucks. But oh well. I'll probably still buy it. I mean I shouldn't buy a next gen console just to play old games, lol. You sure the MGS bundle got the emotion engine back? All I heard is that it's basically an 80GB PS3 + MGS4 + Dual Shock 3.

There's a list of compatible games on the Playstation website, so you can check if the games your trying to play will work. And I seriously doubt they will upgrade the 80 gig system.

There is no reason to bring the EE chip back in any console at any time. The people that bought early enough to get the 20 or 60 gig system actually got the best PS3 system that will be released at any time.

Im not trying to pick a fight but, honestly i think i got the best deal. Not only can i play ps2 games (never had a problem with any, and even if i did i have a ps2 from launch that still works) i also got 20gb more memory, got a game bundled with it, and paid one hundred dollars less, so im sorry but i fail to see how 60gb is better.

When I was about to get my PS3, I checked the compatability list for the 80 gig and Dragon Quest 8 wasn't on it. That was a game I didn't finish and still wanted to play, and I was giving my PS2 to my cousin.

My 60 gig was 499.99 also, I just missed out on Motorstorm. And I'll pick the EE over Motorstorm any day because I play a lot of PS1/2 games. I could care less about the extra 20 gigs, I have a 360 and never maxed out that hard drive.

I'm happy with my 20gb version. Its the best for me. I like the all black scheme to it also. Anyway, go for the 80gb. Its your best bet with your options handed to you.

Well actually the Bc is c close to 100% BUT a bunch of games have problems when you play them so therefore around 80% work with no major problems

Dragon Quest 8 is awesome, you should definitely check it out. I'm thinking about checking out Persona 3 or Rogue Galaxy. And I never played Xenosaga 3, I might get that too.
