Okay,

I know this subject has been discussed to death, but what I want to know is , is there any rumors or hints if the ps3 is eventually going to get a ps2 backward compatibility ?

I heard like they are not including it now on purpose(specially that the first version did have it) because of price or because they made more money on ps2. But ps2 is going to die any way , and ps3 will get cheaper.

Or is this a wish that will never ever going to happen and I should just get a ps2? Or wait for a ps4 :D

I am in no rush for this, I just need to know if it is ever going to happen

You are charged per game, while the original 80 gig did emulate PS2 games for the base price of the console. By the way it sounds Sony will be releasing PS2 and DC games for sale on PSN.

If you wanted BC support for PS2 games you shoulda bought a PS3 back in the begining. I don't think they will be supporting PS2 games in any PS3 anymore even after the PS2 have been discontinued later on.

Sony has come out and said they are not putting BC back into PS3s. But I personally don't believe them. I am willing to predict that by the end of 2010, PS2 BC will be added back into PS3 via software update. There is just too much benefit to having it and NOTHING to lose. I just think that right now, the PS3 isn't successful enough (profit wise) for Sony to risk losing all that PS2 money. But as you point out, at some point the PS2 is going to die off and there are countless millions of PS2 fans and PS2 games out there people will want to hold on to.

Meanwhile, just like with PS1 games on PSN store, they can make more money by offering certain PS2 games for sale and download off the store.

It's a rumour that won't go away. The recent leaked minutes from a meeting between Sega and Sony discussing PS2 games on the PSN has only added to the speculation.

They've also taken out a patent on emulation software for the Emotion Engine.

They've also taken out a patent on emulation software for the Emotion Engine.

The Emotion Engine was in all the 20 and 60 gig NTSC PS3's that supported PS2 games. The graphics syntisizer was used in all the PS3's that had BC support for PS2 games. Now all PS3's are manufactured without the GS chip so that would also need to be emulated which seems to something Sony isn't trying to do because of the various ways different games are coded. The Emulation Engine patent was over a year or so ago but it seems that no one looks at the date it was filed.

Reason that I do not want a ps2 is simple, I do not need all the extra hardware, wires, and plugs. If I have a Wii, I really do not wish to add a gamecube next to it, its just so much more efficient this way. And it makes a lot of sense to put a ps2 support in ps3, specially that they did it early on.

If you want BC support you need to shop around for a used 20, 60 or early 80 gig PS3 and be willing to pay the asking price even if it's more than the current price of the new PS3's. These kind of threads make me feel so much better about spending the money early and get the first of the 60 gig systems.

You can't compare Wii to PS3. The Wii's hardware is a GC with beefed up power. When you play Wii, your not playing on a brand new system. I am sorry, I am not trying to play system wars, but it's the truth. The PS3 has different hardware thatn the PS2 and emulating things somethimes is a very hard thing to do. Even PC ones that run the old NES and SNES games aren't always perfect and those things have been around since 97-98. Plus the less hardware they have to manufacture, the cheaper the cost to make, the better it is for the consumer. The new PS3 only costs like $250 to make, so every slim sold is now a profit for Sony. If the PS3 did have BC, it would probably cost $400 again and then we would see more threads about why the PS3 cannot be cheaper. You are not going to get a premium system for $300, it does not exist.

^this

However you don't have to pay really high prices. I got mine used from GameFunk for 265. I see the price has now gone back up. Anyways mine was listed as "Very Good" but when I got it there were no scratches. The thing looked new. I think you should hang around Amazon and look at the various bundles and skus for a deal.

or

Try not to buy one brand new for a ridiculous price as there really are some unscrupulous dealers out there triple and double charging for these units. A used unit that has been treated well should suffice. I bought the motorstorm one as it was cheap and had BC. I really wanted the MGS4 bundle but those are generally more expensive and usually the dealers sell it WITHOUT the game for more than the motorstorm bundle.

Ebay is so so. They usually fall within the 300-350 price range for 60 GB units.

At this point, don't get your hopes up, take all rumors with a grain of salt and try to block it from your mind. I've been hoping for it for far too long and nothing yet. One day, when the PS2 finally dies, it might come. But the best thing to do for now is to not think about it.

Well, I am thinking about it now and I can tell you, where I am people are not looking for ps2 backward compatibility. As far as I can tell I can get ps3 first models in exhange for a ps3 slim extremely easy(to them it is new slim for a 3 year old ps3, who wouldn't trade?) but I got the idea now about Sony's direction on this topic, but I still say it will be included by the end of the ps3 era.

This is crazy, but I think there is a mod where you can create a PS2 partition on your hard drive to install PS2 game data. Would that make the games playable?

it might happen because I got a singstar update to format some PS2 games for singstar. i traded in my ps2 cause i started with a 60gb but it died and now i'v ended up with a 80gb. i held onto my games because of this rumour , but oh well i can buy it for less than i traded it in for on eBay.
