Well so far so good.  I have not read anywhere from any media source about many defective units.  Looks like the PS3 is a very well built piece of equipment.  I just hope it lasts for many years.  Because my PS2 worked fine for about two years after launch and then I had many many problems with it.  I found out how to fix it myself, but it was still quite aggrevating and the problem was very repetitive.

Crossing my fingers that we can all still say our PS3s are going strong throughout the next 5-7 years.  At least until PS4 anyways.

The only problems I have had so far have been with 1.51 update. It has caused video playback to stop periodicly and there has been times where it has froze for more thea 30 seconds. It has not affected my games in any way.

Hmm...I have been experiencing the same thing with the 1.51 update. Video playback freezes for about 5 seconds for me. I then hit start and the movie resumes. Gameplay is not affected. I can't tell though. If we are experiencing different forms of freezing, is this a firmware problem? Or is this a hardware problem?

I've had absolutely no problems with my ps3, which i got in December. I figured it would've at least frozen once are twice, as many people here have complained about, but it hasn't.

only problems ive had is with bluetooth. if you try turning on your headset during a game, itll slow the entire system down, along with lagging the online (at least in the case of resistance), only for a few seconds though

unfortnantly some are defective. I have had my first and second one replaced because the USB ports wouldnt work. such and uncommen problem and I get it twice. also a friend of mines froze a few times so he replaced it now his new one wont play games so hes getting it replaced again. but my other friends PS3 has worked perfectly. and it seems like most PS3s are perfect, i guess me and my friend were just unlucky.but even if you do have a defective one sony replaces them free of charge and pretty quickly.

Headsets should be turned on before you even load the game, at that point you shouldnt experience any lag if not then it's your connection. No one else ever complains of this. Bluetooth controllers have been rumored to have glitchy moments but I personally beleive this is due to poor handleing of the early charging of the batteries (you're suppose to charge it fully and drain it completely several times to maximize it's battery) I've never experienced the jumpy controler syndrome on my own system.

Otherwise the systen has had a remarkable rate of functioning units.

Nope...I haven't bothered to buy a Bluray movie...yet because I don't have a HDTV...yet. But my new 50 inch Sony Grand Wega that will be in my sweet bedroom, now that's entertainment.

Sigh...I'm torn. I want to return my system because the Bluray playback error is making me uneasy (I'm not sure if it's a hardware problem/firmware problem) Unfortunately, the store where I bought it from has no more PS3's. So my options are: 1) Return it, get charged the 15% restocking fee, and leave the store with nothing 2) Return it, get store credit, use it towards the purchase of an Xbox360 (relax! relax! I want nothing to do with this defect-prone system) 3) Return it, get store credit, hold onto the store credit (but honestly...what am I going to do with $700 of Toys R Us store credit?) 4) Stick it out and hope that the March update will fix my firmware problem. I am very thankful that gameplay is not affected so I guess I shouldn't be complaining too loudly!

A family member and I both own PS3s for a couple of months and experienced zero problems. It comes with a year warranty out of the box from Sony. Additionally, it was airlifted first-class; it's highly unlikely it took any major shocks unless some idiot made a mistake on the ground. From my experience and from what I hear, there are very few problems with the PS3, due to Sony's care in both manufacturing and shipping the consoles. I'm very satisfied...especially each time I read a disaster report about an Xbox 360 breaking down. It runs much more dependently than my PC! One word of warning, however: keep your Playstation 3 in open air, not in an enclosed environment. It spits out hot air like no other...it doesn't affect the internal system, but in a closed environment, the hot air just gets contained and warms up the console itself. Like it's pissing all over itself.

there have been no problems as big as 360 had from what i've read, which has been nothing because it hasnt been in any news.

for some reason though, when i went to buy  my PS3 dec 23rd, the guy at best buy said they have already had alot of people take the PS3 back, either broken or didnt want it anymore i dont know.  and a friend on xbox live said that someone from best buy i think, not sure, said like 40% have been returned...purely bs.  i dont know what their motives are or why they would stop someone from buying a $600 piece of tech, but they surely have a reason.

finally, you do have a chance of it being defective, but like someone said sony does have a 1 yr warranty (which btw the employee from best buy told me i was stupid for asking him that question, he said something like "why the hell would they do that they arent that stupid")   i told him thats what i've read from sites like ign and such, and the PSP had the same thing.  employees at stores like Gamestop and best buy are just unejumacated and dont care about their customers or products i guess...thats what i get from it.

Unless you buy it in a back alley, most store have a return policy. If it's a dud unit, swap it!

i didnt say every store and every employee does.  i havent really had an incident in my gamestop but have heard many stories.  but that was my experience in best buy, he was just saying a bunch of BS, and didnt know what he was talking about.

but i do think there is a simple answer.  he probably told me there wasnt a 1 year warranty on it and that alot of people have returned them so we would buy the 2 year warranty plan.  and no i didnt just think of that, just forgot to meantion it.  and even though i didnt want the 2 year plan is, we basically had to buy it.  i had to use the restroom so i just told my g/f (i was using her dads credit card, wouldnt have the money till the next day) not to get it, but when i got back they hadnt purchased it yet b/c the cashier said it'd be better to buy it, i said no, he wouldnt ring the thing up just kept staring.  so i just said **** it and wasted $100.

im still under the 90 day store warranty or w/e, so i think im gonna trade mine in for another one because i dropped my ps3.  still plays games and movies (except for glory) but it has cosmetic damage on the side that imma try to cover up, and once or twice it has made this loud sound like its having trouble reading the disc, i dunno.  but they pissed me off and screwed me over, so now imma do the same thing.

Had mine for about two and a half months with zero problems so far. I've only watched Talladega Nights and Superman Returns on it but so far Bluray playback is perfect for me.

I have owned my ps3 for about two months already, and have not yet experienced any problems with it. It is very amazing, personally, I think it is the best system ever made (and no I am not a fanboy) so anyone still undecided about it I recomend you buy it.

I don't have one, but there haven't been reports of there being too many defects and they seem durable. I still have my dad's PS2 which was bought a few months after launch. Sony's good with making long-lasting systems.

I brought it along with us to kansas city to play at the hotel, but we stayed at a crappier one than we usually do so the tv ended up not having the hookups.  but anyway i left the ps3 in the car when we arrived and didnt check the tv for the hookup.  then we went around the city and i wanted to get a few things outta my bag, and accidentally left it unzipped.  i completely forgot later and when i grabbed it outta the car it fell on the ground.  now on the right side (when your facing the ps3) where the holes are, half of that is dangling, and in the corner its chipped a little, but unless best buy does a thorough seach i dont think they will notice.

but anyway from now on i'll carry my console in a seperate bag.  this is the first time i have brought any console on a trip with me to...

My consoles has been flawless. The only problems I have experienced are random disconnects with Bluetooth (controller, and headset). This is a common problem with Bluetooth though. I really expected there to be a ton of problems since the PS3 has such new technology in it, but I have been surprised and delighted that there hasn't been. This could change, but I am a proud owner now.

[QUOTE="Redfingers"] One word of warning, however: keep your Playstation 3 in open air, not in an enclosed environment. It spits out hot air like no other...it doesn't affect the internal system, but in a closed environment, the hot air just gets contained and warms up the console itself. Like it's pissing all over itself.

I second that! Though I love when xbox owners that I hang out with say that when ever they see it in the stores they're usually frozen. its not the systems fault,  its the environment blocking air vents, its like leaving the car parked where the sun can just scorch the air inside

im currently tempted to buy the ps3 but the only thing holding me back is that im scared i may get a defective system or it may break easily. have there been any cases where the ps3 breaks quickly or is it a really well built system?

Why would you care? People are stupid being cautious about buying a system because it will break down, let me introduce you to a word that will help ease your worries: warranty.

I haven't heard of any, unlike the 360, or the disc read errors from the PS2.
