Well it did start up... so it's not completely dead, but it does not play disks at all. Blu-ray doesn't work. Dvd doesn't work. Resistance didn't work. I put the disk it and I see an icon in the top right hand corner telling me that the system is doing something but it doesn't load the disk. If I scroll through the media bar I don't see any disks there either.

Oh... and I did buy the system used off of a website with a very good rating and track record. I understand that sony has a very good history with having reliable consoles when compared to microsoft. Of course I'll be able to send it back and get it replaced. But I just wanted to see if this was a common problem or if anyone else had experienced this and what they did about it.

Sounds to me like you either got a bad USED unit from someone, or it was damaged during shipping.

To even mention this and the PS3's reliability in the same sentence (or thread)...

with this problem, it typically happens very soon after you buy it if it will happen at all...so most people are able to return/exchange it

He means that out of the very few problems that occur, not being able to read the disc is the most common problem (Other problems are rare). He is not saying it happens to every PS3.

TC is the information bar running when you turn the system on and is your network set-up. The reason I was wondering is that I lost my internet for a few days due to a failed component that serves my area. When this happened it took about an hour to finally get the bar turned off because it was taking resources away from everything on the system, I could scroll the XMB menu without a problem but when I would make a selection I would have to wait several minutes for selection to open and then go to the next step. But after shutting the information bar down it ran flawlessly.

that information bar should always be turned off...don't know why Sony decided to put that over the stuff people were craving in their infamous 2.0 update....

good to know that i'm not the only who had a problem with their ps3. what is this information bar everyone is talking about? another weird thing is that if i go to the video selection is says "looking for store" or something like that as if its trying to get online but it always comes up with nothing. samething with audio. i'm running a system update right now to the newest version. its going to take a couple of hours to finish. i don't think anything will change but running updates is the solution to most computer problems.

i can easily get a replacement from the website i ordered from. so i'll probably start send.ing emails and stuff tonight

As someone who owns a 60gb this statement is forgiveable, seeing as how the console we own is the one that built the, "less than 2%" motto. However this problem is quite frequent in the 40gb and 80gb units. So there should be no eye rolling.

It was most likely damage during shipping or a very badly used unit. The probability of a defective PS3 is so low that you're only left to assume those two occurences.

In addition to that, change the thread title if it wasn't "dead on arrival."

Humm thats interesting. Because the box my PS3 was once hooked into. Now on my PC. All of a sudden seems to have major issues from the provider. Despiet the fact that its PC issues now. And they were about the same as you mentiones when hooked to the PS. Now the PS3 has no issues. But was, Kinda odd how that worked? Must have alot of Xnots at the old cable building up the road here lol.

major update

I downloaded the system update (which took like 5 hours) and the system restarted. After it booted in the new version it instantly recognized my disks and played them flawlessly. It also looks alittle better on my display too. Hopefully things stay fixed!!

Who would have known that updating the console would fix the problem?! Obviously there was something wrong with the systems software.

Wow... *wrists*

Anyways... I know you were looking for a good deal, but just save your money and buy one in stores... It will have more life and less problems in the future.
