I'm away at college and my dad back home is talking about buying some $500'ish blu-ray DVD player. Is there *any* reason foor me to not try and convince him to buy the PS3 and use it as a Blu-Ray player? That way when I go home for vacation I'll have something fun to do and he'll get his blu-ray player. Is the quality of it crap or something?

I have watched numerous movies on mine and I think it is great.  My brother has a stand alone BR player with the exact same TV as mine and I will take my PS3 as my Blu-Ray player over his anyday.  Not to mention the added bonuses of internet access and games off of it also.  I really is a no brainer.  Oh, and did I mention it is less expensive then most stand alone unit also. :D

To me, it would be stupid to buy a stand-alone blu-ray player for $500 instead of a PS3. The PS3 is just as good of a blu-ray player and its a PS3!!! You should definitely talk him into getting a PS3, my parents just found out what a blu-ray player is, when I started buying blu-rays and now they're probably getting a stand-alone player, even though they'll be like $200 in a year, and they still pay to download mp3's!!!! Please save your father from getting ripped off, it's too late for me.

One of the reasons I went with a PS3 was it's Blue-Ray disc player was actually a lot less than a stand alone unit. Also look at how many movie titles are being released in Blue-Ray now. Also the console can be used as several other media devises such as viewing pictures, home made videos, listening to music, and with each firmware update it actually get's better.

I have heard that it is one of the best players. There are certain feature in newer BD movies that cannot be accessed on earlier BD players, but the ps3 still runs the more advanced version fine.

Robert Heron says the PS3 is a decent player but it isn't as good as the $800+ blu-ray player.  It should definately be as good as the $500 player.  Also Robert Heron finally says the PS3 is a great DVD player when it can finally do the the DVD upscaling.

Sony should have scraped the Blue Ray player, and sold the PS3 at an affordable price.

Well lets see...I believe the PS3 is one of 3 Bluray players that can output 1080p24...I believe it's one of two Bluray players that has built in TrueHD decoders...It's one of very few Bluray players with a ethernet port for firmware updates,  because of that,  BD-J can be added,  while some BD players will become obsolete when BD-J is finally done,  because of the ethernet port  it will also be amongst the first Bluray players with DTS-HD audio decoders...Firmware updates are a breeze thanks to PSN...

The only BD player i would consider over the PS3 is the Samsung BDP1200 because of the Reon chip,  but i'd rather get a receiver with a built in Reon chip for all input sources...

Has your dad considered a HD DVD player?  They are only $250 at Costco and $243 at Samsclub,  and both places have a satisfaction guaranteed return policy...So if he doesn't like it 3 months later, or 6 months later, or 2 years later, he can always return it and get all his money back...The HD DVD player will go back up to $350 dollars next week tho,  the $250 is a special promotion going on right now..And you get 5 free movies...

HD DVD player for $250...Lifetime Unlimited Return Policy...5 Free HD DVD's...Damn that's a hell of a deal,  im trying really hard to convince my wife we need this HD DVD player, and that we need to get rid of the HD DVD add on for the 360 because it does not output lossless audio...

Just as with SD DVDs, there are crap quality HD DVDs.

PS3 is just as good as any blu-ray player, but it's also about the movies.

Theres acctually a website with a tier system that rates blu ray movies from 0-4, 0 being perfect and 4 being near dvd.

picture is beautiful on a good tv. it's cheaper than any quality bluray player (which are still $1,000). get the PS3. i have Apocalypto, Casino Royale, Taladega Nights, Mission Impossible 3, The Prestige, Pirates 1 & 2 and Deja Vu on bluray and i love them.

plus everything else the PS3 does doesn't hurt.

Here is an example of why you should get the PS3 as a Bluray player...

300 will have TrueHD audio...Only the PS3 and the $1000 dollar Panasonic Bluray player can decode TrueHD audio...

It's been rated as the one of the top BR players on the market, comparable to the Sony SBDP-1, which retails for $800 (formerly $1000).  The ps3 upscales DVDs to 1080p, and does everythinhg a normal BR player would, however, it also receives firmware updates periodically, which means it could become even better over time.  They recently added a 24fps/1080p option via firmware, which few other high def movie players have.  It also comes with HDMI 1.3 instead of 1.2 like most high def movie players do.

Storage doesn't effect visuals that much, it just makes high resolution movie last longer.

Point for Blu Ray is it's storage medium and it has most of the movie industry's support unlike HD DVD.

Well, admittedly, for some, image quality is very subjective. For me, though, I was pleasantly surprised to see the quality difference between SD and HD. The first HDDVD I watched was Happy Feet. It had the SD version on one side and the HDDVD version on the other. Watching the opening song in HD and then rewatching it in SD, the image was absolutely different. The cracks in the ice, the feathers on the penguins, just the overall clarity and the way the image "popped off" the screen was much more evident in HD. I wasn't a true believer before seeing that disc.

On the other hand, I watched Fearless the other day (yah, it was only in 720p because it was the 360's HDDVD player through component) and it didn't look "spectacular", it was nice, but it might not have been a huge difference between the HD version and an upscaled SD version.

Overall, I've been very happy with the format. Having both a PS3 and a 360 add-on, I get the best of both worlds, though I'll probably buy more Blu-Ray's now that I have a 1080p player (PS3).

My tv is a 50" Sony A2000.  At that size, maybe it is easier to see a difference in the quality?  A smaller LCD may not show the difference as readily as a bigger picture?

It's great as a blu-ray player. Make sure you use an HDMI cable (if possible) so you can upconvert your DVD's to HD resolution. CNET.com actually uses a PS3 when testing out their HDTV's for review.

If you do get it you'll want to get the remote, plus HD cables. So it might be a little more than expected. You could tell him you can browse the internet on it. Which is a feature not available to any standalone BR player.

Well, it's been a few months since I originally started this thread, and I just want to thank everyone who answered, it definitely influenced our purchase. We've had a PS3 for a while now and it's amazing as a blu-ray player. Just saying thanks, as well as bumping this to help anyone else who may have the same questions I did months back.
