60GB PS3's have the chip in it to play PS2 games

80GB PS3's have the downloaded software that lets it play PS2 games

So my question is, whats stopping the 40GB from playing PS2 games? Why can't it use the software like the 80GB?

The 80GB emulates it.

I don't know why the 40GB can't play it, but if it is only software emulation then I can see Sony releasing the software via PSN at a later date. But who knows...

It can easily be done via firmware, but I just don't see why they would leave out something so essential in the first place.

That sucks because BC was one of their key selling points.

I love plaing all of my ps1 and ps2 games on my 80 gig PS3 from time to time. I can even create a memory card for each game.

Too bad they dont give that ability to everyone in a firmware update...

Because the 80GB model isn't 100% software. Only the Emotion Engine CPU is emulated in software. 80GB models still have the PS2's GS chip in them. Since there is no software emulator for the GS chip the 40GB model can't play PS2 games. 100% of PS1 games are emulated in software, so the 40GB model can play those.

60gb PS3 - have EE + GS chips.
80gb PS3 - Has GS chip + Emulates the EE
40gb PS3 - do NOT have GS therefore can't run PS2 games
20gb PS3 - has EE + GS chips

I'm so glad I got the last of the 60 Gig models. I can play all PSOne and PS2 games, and the Codebreaker disk works as well.
