This topic is for those who wish to discuss the backward compatability. Specificall for those of us who want backwards compatability. If you don't miss the BC, or want to share your opinion that BC compatability is not necessary, then please start a new thread or post it to some other thread.

I want to discuss the BC that is and should be in the PS3.

Since the demise of HD-DVD, I am now open to upgrade my dvd player. What better next gen dvd player than the PS3, right? Well, to get the most bang for my buck, I've been trying to find a 60 gig PS3 for a reasonable price. As you all know these are in the highest demand because they have the hardware BC, and cost a small fortune.

My question, does anyone know or has anyone heard through the grape vine about a future release of PS3 with the full hardware BC?

Also, for those of you with the 80 gig model, how is the software BC? Is it reliable? Does it play the majority of game properly?

Thanks.

i haven't had my 80g for very long however i haven't had any problems with any of my PS2 games so far altho i kinda messed up transfering my ps2 memory to my ps3 and ended up losing all of my ps2 stuff like my 100+ hours in FFX but anyway, its reliable enought for me for now altho i wouldn't mind having a 60g tho... guess thats what we get for waiting so long to get one...

I suspect that if we wait longer though, they'll eventually come back with full hardware BC. Eventually, like after the prices go down and they want to spur new interest, I bet they'll release a new sku with BC.

60gb - 99% B/C *hardware* - Discontinued

80gb - 84% B/C *software* - Discontinued eventually

20gb - 99% B/C *hardware* - Discontinued

40gb - 0% B/C

120gb - 0% B/C - future PS3 will not have B/C supposedly

People say that the hardware is better than the software, I can't really tell the difference since I have a 60gb.

The hardware support will never be brought back although the software support might be used later. I am glad I got the 60 gig while they were still around.

This is the main reason why I will always feel that my $600 was money very well spent. 60 gig ftw!!!

Although Sony seems to be moving away from BC, it was always important to me. I loved that the PS2 could play the PS games. I have an 80gb, which I got because it was the only sku left in my area with BC - I know a lot of people buy these things on ebay, but I don't feel comfortable spending that kind of money on there. It has decent BC. Some of my games don't fully function, but are still playable, it's just that some of the options may not work properly. I can only hope that they keep updating the BC list and effectiveness of the software. But I'm not even sure they're doing that anymore.

there is no 120 gig system as many had reported, sony is getting ready to release an 80gig mgs4 bundle in june which brings the return of the 80gig console which will still have the software emulation capability

I'm a U.S launch day owner...I'm glad I went with my gut and got the 60g because most people thought there would be faulty hardware issues with the first round of ps3's. Mine has been working fine since 11-17-06...I use it for a majority of my multimedia needs, not just games.

1. Bluray

2.music and movie streaming(FROM MY MAC AND PC)

3.Games(GO FIGURE) LOL

4.Picture downloads from my camera

5.Web-browsing(IT'S COMING ALONG, BUT IT STILL NEEDS ALOT OF WORK)

6. Linux(I haven't installed it, but I 'm seriously thinking about it)

At the time, the backward compatibility function wasn't even a big deal becuase nobody would have even thought sony would take it out of future consoles. It seems this Gen that Launch day owners made out good this time. lol

Sony is cutting as much as they can from the PS3 to lower prices and production costs, first they went from hardware BC, to software BC, now to no BC at all. They are trying to gain a good amount of the market share by cutting out the most they can while still having it be a "PS3". After they have gained some sort of reputation in this console generation, they might return to full BC. But right now, anything that increases PS3 price will decrease demand and they don't want that.

On gamespot it is advertised that Sony is marketing a new 80g Playstation 3 bundle with MGS4 and the new controller. However, they neglected to say if it would be BC. Your guess is as good as mine. The 60g has the best BC capability of all the Playstation 3 models. With the 80g, PS 3 as my first Sony Console the BC feature has opened up an awesome library of Sony games for me. But in many cases it is limited. But MGS:Sons of Liberty and Final Fantasy XII play flawlessly. It is a great feature to have. I hope, for other games like me, the new Playstation 3 has BC so they can also enjoy a wider library of great games.
