The older 20GB, 40GB, and I think the 60GB can, but everything that's out now in retail can't. It was ditched to reduce the price.

20 60 and early 80gb (4 usb slots) can, Not the 40gb
"Ps2 system data" It can be downloaded off the PS store for the older models that cant play ps2 games, hope that helps.
Except that isn't for adding PS2 BC. That file is specifically a fix for the few PS2 games that used the PS2's add-on hard drive (Final Fantasy XI Online for example) because those games, when played on a BC capable PS3, couldn't recognize the PS3's hard drive. That file is useless for non-BC PS3s."Ps2 system data" It can be downloaded off the PS store for the older models that cant play ps2 games, hope that helps.

This has been a problem from the beginning. I'm on the brink of buying a B-ray DVD player instead of a PS3 simply because the PS3 costs too much and I want to watch B-ray movies. If I do buy a B-ray DVD player, I assuradly won't be buying a PS3 in the near future. Too bad, it woould have been nice to play GoW3. One game isn't enough for me though.

I have the 20gb PS3 and it can't read, do I need to download something from PS store? 'causeI saw something in the PS store about it :?
its cos people like us keep complaining about the price so in response Sony released a Dumbed down version of the Ps3 No card reader , No BC, and 2 less USb ports

thats BS and you know it. Emulators cost NOTHING.
Emulators take time to develop, test, recode for major bugs/errors, retest, etc. until an acceptable level of quality in the emulation is achieved. And you know time is money. As it is, Sony does not have an emulator that emulates all aspects of the PS2 architecture. Even the last PS3s that had BC weren't fully software emulation; they still had half of the PS2's chipset (the GPU) integrated on the motherboard. That's a material cost no matter how you look at it (regardless of how big or little that cost actually was), and removing it removes a cost from the material list of manufacturing PS3s.You had a "hunger for a next gen console" to play previous gen games lol? Oh well, but there are rumours floating around that will release an update that will allow you to play previous gen games on your console.
i went to gamestop with a hunger for a next gen console and a wallet full of cash. i was talking to the salesperson their and he said that the ps3 cannot play games from the ps2. is this true, and if so, why the **** not!? Keep in mind, one of the biggest selling points that moved PS2's out the door was its backward compatibility with ps1 games. As such, it was expected that Sony would continue the tradition and allow full BC, especially with all the hoopla they made about it at E3, and using it as a dig on Microsoft's console and their limited BC. Now, it seems as far as the BC argument goes, it is Microsoft having the last  at Sony's expense as they so quickly neutered their own units.[QUOTE="White_wolf_eye"]That's only there so that FF XI will work on a BC ps3. I myself have a few games that didn't explicitly advertise hard drive functionality but did use it (such as NFL 2k5) and it simply won't recognize the ps3's hard drive for any form of usage. That file is otherwise useless."Ps2 system data" It can be downloaded off the PS store for the older models that cant play ps2 games, hope that helps.

This is why I hate Sony fanboys. What is SO WRONG about wanting a feature-complete console? Every single one of you act like it's somehow criminal to want a system that does it all (e.g. the original 60) at a reasonable price. :| Are you simply trying to (over)compensate for the fact that Sony did do an epically bone-headed move by neutering their own console where the competition improved theirs with each new revision? You had a "hunger for a next gen console" to play previous gen games lol? Oh well, but there are rumours floating around that will release an update that will allow you to play previous gen games on your console.

They've been making a profit on it for a long time now. Given their latest report to stockholders (which had since been leaked which is why I know about it), it costs $ony currently $252 to make the c urrent ps3's. That's basically $150 profit on the base 80GB model, and even more on the 160GB model. Not to mention, think of the name, PlayStation 3 - that pretty much implies that there is some evolution from the last one, and to consumers that remember (fondly) the PS2 in its launch, it was expected to be able to play the prior gen games that they already grew to love. It's business 101: if you're making a new version of a product right after a widly successful generation prior, it is in your best interest to make it easy for those people to adopt to your product. In this case, retaining BC would have been the most (logical) business move on Sony's part to migrate PS2 gamers over and allow them to drop the ps2 from the market without a market backlash. As it is now, Sony is now having to keep the PS2 around so they don't suddenly piss off enough people to get yet another class action lawsuit on their hands like they did with all the build quality problems they engineered into those original PS2's.dont buy ur PS3 yet...wait until holiday season because then sony will actually make a profit off of it along and it might be cut in price again....plus are you buying the thing to play PS3 games or PS2 games?

It wouldnt factor in the cost of production significantly. And the PS3 costs more than60% less to make since launch.
These kind of threads just make me that much happier that I bought my 60 gig PS3 even at full retail. The 60 gig can still be found used/refurbished but they cost about the same as the current new models. If I ever want another PS3 I am going for a used /refurbished 60 gig system. Unless in the future the full BC and all the other features are brought back.jimm895Yea, if you want one that was already beat to **** and back again. If you want one in good condition now, you're going to be spending about as much as it would cost to buy a used **** car on eBay because of the **** con-artists there.
this is why im glad i bought the metal gear 4 80 gig with backwards compatibility.

Yeah, while not the greatest as far as BC goes it does play most of the games. I have about 35 PS2 games which I bought all after purchasing a PS3. I just got back into gaming after leaving it after the Sega Genesis. I would say only 3 of those games had issues and one which I returned SWBFII(greatest hits version)for the playable non-greatest hits version couldn't play. The other 2 that have bugs but are still playable are R&C Deadlocked and GT4. I might return to Gamestop GT4 but that is more due to not really care for the racing style. I prefer Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 type of game.
Only 60GB plays PS2 as far as I know. Not sure if 20GB can but none of the newer consoles can play PS2
Try finding a 60GB if you want to play the PS2 games that you have

As was stated earlier in the thread 20gb, 60gb are almost fully BC with PS2 games. The early version of the 80GB(4usb ports) and the PAL region 60gb are about 85% BC. All other models the current 80gb(2usb ports), 40gb and 160 gb don't have any BC for PS2 games. All PS3's are BC with PS1 games.
I don't see a problem here.
When PS3 came out and for the next year and a half 60GB and 80GB both played PS2 games. If you didn't buy it then then look for used models online. Even some electronic shops have them.
This whole "yelling" to put it politely that some of you are screaming about is nothing more then childish maturity.
Sony offered B/C systems for almost two years and if you wanted one - should had bought it. To costly? save up and buy one.
It's not like Sony simple released PS3 with no system that can play PS2 games. The options were there and still are. Instead of complaining about it and not doing the research on products lets instead make such unnecessary topics in PS3 forums when both the original poster topic creator and few more individuals should voice "their opinions" where it belongs - system wars forums or Sony PS3 official forums.
I don't mean to sound rude but in all honestly, at this point in PlayStation 3 life cycle if you don't do research on the product you want to spent hard earn money on I don't know what else to call it..
Let me give small piece of advice.
If you still want to play your PS2 games and don't wish to invest in 60 GB or older 80GB which can be found as I said earlier - online and some electronic boutiques then by all means keep your PS2 and simply save up for PS3, if you even want one that is.
There is no need to blame the company for wishing to succeed and move forward into future with latest console, in this case PS3..
Sometimes I wonder if people think before they post or just wish to make yet another topic to continue unnecessary and in my opinion stupid system wars debates that is really not else but poison in this generation.
Games should be about fun yet all I see majority of the time is anger, bitterness and fanboys with nothing else to do but argue who's console is better..
Sad really.

im buying it to play ps3 games but i have alot of ps2 games id like to be able to play still.
i was planning on selling my ps2 but now i have to keep it it just made me a little dissapointed.
Untrue. You do mean to sound rude, or you wouldn't have wasted your time posting. Sony has done a dis-service to its user base by doing this, and we're calling them out for it. If anything, you should be siding with us because you (who live in the UK) especially got shafted with the arbitrary release delay and ending up with a limited-BC model from the start. At this point, the only people who should be defending Sony's position regarding how they've neutered their units now (instead of making better models with improved BC and the like) are those retailers trying to move units, Sony spokes-people, and stockholders. Read: only those with a vested interest in saving Sony's (scarred) face could honestly think doing this was a good idea. And mostly the stockholders, with how they (Sony) will so readily tell them how much profit they're making per console now. :roll:I don't mean to sound rude but in all honestly, at this point in PlayStation 3 life cycle if you don't do research on the product you want to spent hard earn money on I don't know what else to call it..

thank you Sony fanboys are annoying and always trying to make sony seem always right when their majority of the time not.
In fact, there is a way to play PlayStation2 games on the newer edition of the PlayStation3. Firstly, you must go to the PlayStation Store Secondly, proceed to Add-On followed by Disc-Based Games Add-Ons Than go to the PS2 System Data.. Once downloaded and installed, you should be able to play PlayStation2 games on your PlayStation3. Hope it helps.Calabaza1
This is has already been mentioned earlier in the thread. That download only allows for the original PS3 BC models to play some games like FFXI that need PS2 hareware to play on a PS3. They will not make a non-BC PS3 able to play PS2 games. People need to read threads especially ones only a couple pages long before posting erroneous statements.

It's only for a very very few PS2 games that needed the patch to be able to play on the first PS3's. There is no graphics syntysizer emulator and there really isn't much of a chance there will be one. The PS3's that used software emulation had the EE chip and the 20/60 gig had the physical EE chip built in (NTSC) only.
The competition always upgrading the system? They have stopped support on xbox 1 games and only released 29 games in 4 years or so. Avatars are a waste and making everything huge as can be just to be more attractive when in fact it is annoying. How would anyone know how much it costs to make and produce emulators on a new system? You want the system to be $300 and you also want full BC. People sure are cheap these days. Yes I said cheap. You want premium stuff for the cost of a cooling fan. If you want the premium package you are going to have to pay, it's called business. It is called business to make people buy PS2's to play PS2 games. I bought a PS3 and only in the first 7 months did I play older games because their weren't a lot of games out around launch time. There are plenty of games on PS3 now so you should have no reason to go back to your PS2 library that much. I could see it for RPG's and those 1 or 2 classics that you can't live without but seriously GET OVER IT.
Everybody complained and still does to some degree about the PS3 not having enough games and now when the PS3 has enough games, you complain about no BC. Once BC gets added back in if ever, you will find some other reason why you won't buy the system. Face it the PS3 is this gen's GC. No matter what Sony does or puts out people will still say it isn't worth it. It was worth $400 back in October of 07 and it'sthat $400 is worth it even more today. It has over 30 something exclusives retail and PSN titlesthat are worth a play through plus you have the multiplats that might be better on the system likefighting games, FF 13 and other games that willhave to be multi disc on 360. It's easy totransfer your media to PS3 and copy files unlike the 360. There are no batteries required.
I am not trying to be a fanboy but I mean come on, the 360 doesn's face this kind of scrutiny and it's only $70 dollars less and with more problems.
The system's fan is loud as all get up and go. They system is known tofail quite a bit even though they fixed the newer models. I amthe only person I know whohas a 360that hasn't failed. The D pad on the controller is rather bad to put it mildly. You have to pay for mildly superior online at this point every year which could lead you to pay more in the long run.
The PS3is a great value as it stands and if they domake it cheaper, then it's a steal. The 360 might have more games overall, but as far as quality exclusive titles, they are both equal. I find it ridiculous that people have to ponder whether or not to buy a PS3. It's a great system for people looking to jump into next gen and it's a great system for those who have a 360 as well.
