okay.. so i have my ethernet cable hooked up from my modem to my ps3, er i dont have a router. Well, i ran into a few problems when i was trying to get my ps3 online. For one, my ps3 cannot obtain my IP address no matter what. But heres the catch, when i put my modem into a standby state, meaning it isnt online atm, the ps3 can get the IP address, but then the status for the internet connection thing on the screen says fail, with a little message saying "DNS error 80710102". When my modem is online and active, and i try running a test, the ps3 cant even pick up the IP address. ARRRGHHH what do i do? do i need to buy a router??????? plz plz plz help!

Do you have some type of firewall on your computer or modem? If so, have you set your firewall to allow the ps3 to have access to the internet? I would maybe also try doing a manual setup rather than allowing your ps3 to auto detect your settings.

Edit, kind of a dumb question, but do you have the network settings enabled on your ps3?

Try unpluging the power to yoru modem for 3 minutes or so, then restarted it and see if that works. Side note, did you have to give your ISP your PCs MAC address when you got your internet service setup? If so, that could be whats causing your problem.

I have to assume you are switching between your ps3 and you computer connected to the modem right? Turn off/unplug the modem and the Ps3 for 1 min. Then plug the modem back in, wait till all green lights and says online. THEN turn on the ps3 and try. As others have said, you really should get a router (under $20) it will solve alot of headachs

Allows the modem to see the PS3 as far as I know. When you just switch them between the computer and PS3 it seems to confuse the connection in some way. I am sure others could explain it better but 9 times out of 10, resetting it all fixes communications problems. Especially when one is working but the other is not.

Sometimes your internet connection can get "stuck". Meaning that if you simply just tried to switch the cable on the back of your modem it wouldn't recognize your ps3 as being connected to it. By cutting the power to your modem for a minute or so will allow your modem to then detect your ps3. Just try this and see if it helps.

Depending on who your broadband carrier is, they might provide you with a "free" router for home networking. Try assigning the PS3 a static (preset) IP address for your modem.
