As soon as Sony finds out, they'll release an update that is going to solve the problem. So, there is no possible way this is going to happen, in my opinion...

If you actually watched the conference you'd know their main goal is not the piracy of games but other things like bringing back Linux but before it gets to far Sony will most likely stop them since they revealed what they are exploiting. And how can you already call it worse than hacked 360s? I doubt you've been to the future.

Its WIIIDDDEEEE open..! The master keys are the keys that allow you to sign all the files on the system. They can be changed BUT doing so would make all previously signed files invalid, so basically all games and content prior to the change would not work. The keys allow hackers to make "official" programs / apps which are indistinguishable from anything else. Sony can't make a whit list of approved things because the master keys allow this to be change as easily as editing a txt document and its indistingushable to sony. Read up people, its the end days of the PS3. PS4 just got a lot closer on the horizon..

Hate to break it to you but the DS, Wii, 360, PSP and PC (lol) have been hacked for years and they are all doing just fine... There are a lot of people that choose to support the people who make video games.

The master keys were never found on the xbox so they never had full access to the systems. Jtag machines can create hacked games but are easily detected and banned within a day. This means the hacked games are limited and the number's are reducing as the KV needed to access live are very limited now as they are slowly banned.

The conferance people, teamoverflow I believe, don't want to instigate piracy but the master keys will allow anyone to do this and there are always programmers willing to do this.

THIS. Even if someone does figure out how to hack a PS3 its not going to affect them that much. PS3 is the ONLY console that hasn't been tapped into yet, and all the others are doing very well; better in some cases. So even if they did figure some master key BS out I promise you it won't be the end of the PS3. Plus, Sony has already proven they will not back down when it comes to cracking their system. All this is going to do for us is cause us to have to download a crap load of updates and possibly lose even more functionality.

I dont think you understand. Piracy is not the problem, it has a minimal effect on a console, regardless of what some people may argue. Piracy in itself wont hurt PS that much, having the master keys will. Hackers and programmers can edit anything on the console, create any kind of program and interact with the PS3 and PSN in any way they want. The PSP is highly hacked but they never had the master keys untill yesterday. The access the master keys give is equal to the access Sony have. The only thingSong has as an advantage is knowledge of how the system works, but even that will diminish as hackers explore the system.

To give some kind of idea of the damage this will cause think of trainer for pc games. Hackers can now alter anything in a game, anything at all. Unlimited health / weapons / god mode / crash games.. they could even create DLC which gives new weapons if they were talented enough (not going to happen but gives you an idea of the access they now have)

I understand all that, but I find that even less threatening that piracy. So, they can mod games... so what? They can do whatever they want with the PS3; make new firmware, design their own programs, make it play back ups, etc... It won't affect me or how I play, so why should it matter? You say they can do what they want with PSN, but that's not so. In order to alter PSN they need access to Sony's servers and I promise you they aren't getting that anytime soon. The only thing this will be good for is either pirating games or using the PS3 to do something you could do much easier with a computer. That is all.

Yeah, Gamestop and Blockbuster do more damage to game sales than piracy does.

Yeah, TC is correct. This is seriously bad news. Anyone that wants to argue for this like they are just trying to get Linux back, etc. is just fooling themselves. Piracy will be a problem because it takes money out of the hands of the developers. Depending on the developer and their budget, that could kill game series and even game studios. Dont think people wont use this to pirate games like crazy. GeoHot (the original PS3 hacker) had a lot of people pissed at him because he would not release how to pirate games. My friend was talking about this over IM like these guys are just awesome for hacking this. I got seriously pissed and basically told him he was cheering the death of PSN. TC is right...this could be a total disaster for online gaming on PSN. Once attention starved hacks start distributing programs that let you cheat and hack up PSN, it will be all over the place. There are tons of people that will abuse this. It wont stop at the online games either. Think of what this will do for Playstation Home? lol OMG it might just totally melt down on your screen. I'm also worried about account security.

I find it funny how some people believe that Sony can just release an update and fix this. Once a system has been cracked, thats it. There really is no containing piracy. There is no magic update that could fix this. Some people just don't understand this.

It depends on how they're getting in. Some things can be fixed with an update. Others can't. Nobody here knows which this is, because none of us know the system better than Sony.

This is good news actually. Now there are people out there who can create apps for the PS3. Piracy won't be much of big deal anyways: Because 1) PS3 exclusives are extremely huge in size, and you will need a blu ray burner to play them. No pirate will go through all that trouble to get a $60 game for free.

So true. As bad as this hack is, no hacker knows the system better than Sony. Also saying Sony can't fix this is like Sony saying their system can never be hacked. You can always hack a hack.

I don't think it'll be that bad. Dreamcast had no protection at all.

Personally, I think Sega counted on that GD-ROM a little too much.

Sony could simply change the master keys with an update. That would, in turn, make all games developed before the update unplayable. However, Sony could get the devs to go back and update their games. That may be a bit of a doozy to get done, but its still possible. Either way, its just pirating games and playing homebrew software. This has been done for a long time on other systems. Its not that big of a deal.

I don't really care about hackers. I'm happy to have a look of my total library of over 500 games and I won't go the route of some cheap man. Only thing that bugs me are the sales that go back on games, but I do see the appeal of using custom programs on the PS3. I don't think we'll get directly affected by this since cheaters will be obvious and I'm pretty sure Sony will ban them from PSN

Haha sorry, rushed message whilst half asleep. Well I would post a link but I'm pretty sure the whole thread would get deleted and I would be modded. Anything to do with hacking usually ends up that way. If you have a google search for "ps3 master key geohot" you will find all the info you need.

What I meant to say before was that the keys now allow the console to be opened up and modded essentially into a pc through custom fw. There will also be massive advances in emulators, allowing you to emulate pretty much every previous console. Pretty exciting news and can't wait to see what the developers produce and think up. It wont be long before we see some homebrew utilising microsofts kinect on the PS3 either. There are some talented people out there who got things to where they are..!

On the down side the access they have opens the console and PSN wide open to hacking online games. I can't even begin to think of the crap people are going to pull on PSN in the next year. It wouldn't be a problem if a select few developers released signed packages for everyone to use on their console but releasing the master keys means anyone can do this themselves. This means any developer with some skill and determination to be a complete A-hole can cause havoc with the PSN netowrk. I'm not even exaggerating, the PSN network could be brought to its knees with relative ease.

It just makes the security stronger for the PS4, hackers do the leg work of finding the weakness and put them in nifty powerpoints for sony to say "Hmmm.... write this down for next time". Plus it aint gonna change much for the PS3 too many people will still buy legit copies and even then you gotta download anywhere up to 50Gb of data which for some pirates i am sure is just too much, i know i'd rather just buy the damn game than sit for days downloading and then getting it onto PS3 which i'm sure the hackers will release ISO support pretty soon.

this is my point these hackers do not know if these keys are the end all of all keys which is my point. Hackers do not know to end all of a system only the makers do.

These keys are what you need to sign a piece of software to make it compatible with the hardware. So, basically, they can make different programs run on the PS3. Sony can release an update to change the keys, but that would make all current software (like our games!!!) unplayable. An update would work, but Sony would have to have the support of pretty much every developer who has released a game for the PS3 in order to get all those games updated, too. Personally, I don't think they'll bother. This isn't as big a threat as some are making it out to be. Homebrew apps. Woohoo. How dangerous. lol

I know that hack and piracy are not the same, but the psx, ps2 and psp survived right? ,(the last one is still alive), i think sony will do something, dont belive they can fix this but i dont think they will just say "oh well..." and keep walking like nothing.

[QUOTE="MethodManFTW"]Hate to break it to you but the DS, Wii, 360, PSP and PC (lol) have been hacked for years and they are all doing just fine... There are a lot of people that choose to support the people who make video games.

Well of course all those platforms have been hacked, but the more piracy, the more less quality games by developers. Look at the PSP for example. That poor handheld has been hacked so much that less good quality games have been coming out for it. Most people complain about the PSP's software being weak, well blame the pirates for that situation. EA stated themselves that they were almost giving up hope for it too, but continued to support it one way or another. Some people don't care about this, but at the end, their will be someone pirating games for a platform, no matter what the circumstances are.
