Hey Everyone, I have recently purchased the new 320 GB Playstation 3. I have one of the original 60 GB "Big Boy" Playstation 3 units. Seeing as the Playstation Network Store is down right now, I can't use the Data Save Utility to upload all my saves to the PSN server and then download those saves on to my new PS3 unit. So there is another option. The Data Transfer Utility. The PS3's don't seem to be recognizing my Ethernet cord. It says the Ethernet cord is not plugged in or one of the PS3's is not turned on. Both PS3's were turned on at the correct time. I also plugged the Ethernet cord into both units while they were both off. The cable came with my router from my digital cable company. Could this possibly not be the correct cable? Should I get the Ethernet Crossover Cable? If anyone has done this before or has a general knowledge, please reply. All help and advice is appreciated. Thank-you Bateman

I ran into a similar problem when I did it to. You are probabbly using a crossover cable, not an ethernet cable. They look exactly the same. Here is the difference, look at the plugs. If the wires are like this |||X||X||| (doesn't need to be in that order) it's a crossover cable. Wires will crossover each other and look like an X. The cable you need is an Ethernet cable and the wires in the plug will look like |||||||||||. They will all be straight.

Hope this helps.

Compare both ends, if the coloured wires are in a different order from one another then it's a crossover, if they match up then it's a straight through, PS3 should require a crossover as they both the same system and the sending and receiving wire will be have to crossed so that the send wire isn't going to the send wire on the other PS3. I thought all modern NICs would automatically cross over in the hardware so that any ethernet cable could be used.

It is possible that none of this is working because The Playstation Store is "currently undergoing maintenance?" I'm using the same PSN account on both the source and new systems. Do I need to be signed in or out during the data transfer? Bateman

PSN has nothing to do with it. You have to connect both PS3's with an Ethernet cable by the Ethernet ports to each other. You cannot be signed into PSN.

Edit: Wait, I just realised that you haven't connected both PS3's together. Connect both PS3's together with the Ethernat cable and follow the on screen instructions, or read the manual!
