so I turn on my PS3 and five minutes into watching a movie the thing shuts down. No light or anything. I double checked by flipping the switch on the back on and off, but there is absolutely no light or indication my PS3 is still alive.

I'm thinking that the power supply went dead and I'm going to try and replace it. My warranty is up so no big loss. Anybody that is tech savvy know what's going on?has anyone had this happen to them?

It happen to me before, I went out for a while and my little cousin put some stuffed animals while it was on.

It overheated, if the whole system shuts down and doesn't respond..When you return it..keep the controller :)

if you turn in your system to sony, you don't get to keep your controller

you turn in everything to them. that and it costs $150

much cheaper to fix it myself by buying the part that's crapped out and swapping it

I do believe you're right, though. Sony wouldn't disclose the information to me when they repaired my PS3. I had the exact same issue. Though it was starting to happen without games or movies playing. I believe your power supply is failing. I'd call Sony to find out. If you're still covered under warranty, Sony will repair your system free of charge. Otherwise, it's like $149.99 or somewhere around that price for them to fix. Better than getting an entirely new PS3.

Was it surround by anything like books or in a small tight spot. Because it could of overheated like my friend. It burnt something inside of it and died.

Hi,

Something like this happened to me before just when I got the unit. It would shut down at random. Scared me...of all the PS3 units in the store, how could I get *this* one. As it turned out, the power cable between the wall and the PS3 was loose. I pushed it in very hard (don't over do it :) ) and since then, no problems -- it's been over a year.

Not saying this is your problem, but try everything you can before you return it. It may be that something knocked it before and it isn't in correctly since. Of course, also try plugging it into another wall socket. It may be a problem with the wall socket...who knows? If you plug your PS3 into a power bar and you have a spare in the home (i.e., don't buy a new one), replace that, too. See if any of this works...

Good luck!

what do you mean by it was loose? you didn't have it plugged in all the way, or your ps3 and power chord weren't able to connect all the way and couldn't conduct electricity and I let my PS3 breath a lot a lot
