My PS3 shut off while I was playing MW3 (which is still in the PS3) withouth any warning. When I tried to turn it back on, I got some beeping and flashing red light. Best off all it happened after I had done my Black Friday shopping where I could've got my hands on the PS3 Holiday Bundle for $199!!

Apparently, this is the YLOD because the green light turns yellow just before the red starts flashing. I've ordered a repair kit and will attempt to fix it myself. Wish me luck!

I do havetwo burning questions though. Is this going to cause me to lose everything on my HDD? Is there a way to transfer my data to a new PS3 if the fix doesn't work?

Yes. When you buy a HDD for the same console or for a new one, it has to be reformatted. When this happens you lose any game saves if you're using an old HDD for a new PS3 if your old one died. It happened to me. My console is about 2 years old now, so I saved my game saves a head of time. You can save your game saves to a usb stick. Game installations I think can now be saved to the PSN + cloud feature. Don't quote me on that part though.

If your old ps3 with your saves wont turn on your saves are gone. I waited months before i tried the hairdryer method on my dead PS3 to see if it work and i could get my saves onto my flash drive. That method did work for me but my system only lasted about 2 hours before it died again. Taking it apart and applying new paste wasnt worth it to me as that process was WAY to involved. Start looking today see if any deals are still out there, a fixed PS3 is on borrowed time.

Get a new PS3. Fix your old one. While the old one is working, connect your two PS3's and do a system transfer. You will retain everything including locked saves. Deactivate your old console and use it as a blu-ray player until it dies or something.

Exactly what I was planning on doing. Everything I've read says that after the fix, it will probably only last about a year before it happened again. I've been wanting to get a new one anyway because they use less energy and run cooler.

Yeah, the Yellow Light of Death is... tragic. It's happened to me before, and I had to restart all of my saved data over. Some games allow you to copy your saved data to an external device, such as a flash drive or the like, but not all games do; and now that Sony has that Playstation Plus, your best bet is to fork out the $17 every 3 months to gain access to their save cloud, which allows you to save your data on their servers in case your PS3 ever fries again. They also have other deals for your liking sometimes, but yes. Sorry it happened to you, friend. :/ It's a shame...

I'm actually a PS+ member already, and the cloud saving is very nice. But, I have some other game saves that are still on the HDD that I want to keep. I also just pay the $50 for a year of PS+... it's cheaper that way;) My repair kit should arrive in the mail tomorrow... wish me luck. I'll be sure let you all know how it goes.

It is cheaper, I agree; the sad thing is whenever it rolls around that I need to renew it, I always only have around that much in my bank account, anyway. So curse me for poor planning.

Update... My PS3 is up and running again! I used the YLOD repair kit from ifixit.com if anyone is interested... along with their online guide it was pretty easy. It took me 2 hours 40 minutes to complete the entire process. I'm guessing the dust buildup was the reason for the overheating. Even though I thought I was cleaning it well enough... I clearly was not. All my data is in tact, and I now think I have the quietest running PS3 in the world. I don't remember it being this quite... ever. I can actually hear the humming from my TV over the PS3. This is amazing. Of course, now I'm wondering if the fan is even functional.

My PS3 died recently and although it was almost one year past the manufacturer's warranty Amazon gave me a full refund for it when I returned it (minus the cost of a few promotional items).

The cost of fixing it yourself can come out to around at least £40, and if you open it up I'm pretty sure the retailer will not give you a full refund for it regardless of its warranty status, so I would recommend just trying to return it for a full refund.

Preserving game saves isn't important enough to warrant fixing the old one up for a couple of months before it breaks again. Unless there is something that's actually worth saving on there, I would say you're wasting your cash by fixing it temporarily.

Well, mine is almost 4 years old now... so I doubt seriously that any store will give me a refund. My main focus of doing the repair myself is so that I could get my MW3 disc out of it. The repair kit was $50 (with shipping), and that beats $180 for Sony to fix it or $250 for a new PS3. My guess is that people that have theirs break again in a short time aren't doing something properly.

If your self-repaired PS3 lasts for more than a few months, you must have done a much better-than-average repair, and/or your PS3 wasn't as bad as the typical YLOD-PS3. It's a risk to take, but it could definitely pay off, which it may in your case. ;)
