So I've been wanting to get a PS3, but according to everything I've read it isn't backwards compatible with my PS1 and PS2 games.

However, with all the commercials lately stating that the PS3 "ONLY DOES EVERYTHING"...am I to assume that the PS3 is now fully backwards compatible with every PS1 and PS2 game? If so, I'm going to get one.

Well All PS3's are backwards compatible with Ps1 games (Both through the store and As far as I'm software emulation. Is this correct?) And Ps3's will soon be backwards compatible with Ps2 games through the PSN store and certain models already are backwards compatible.

But on Sonys statement, I do literally use my Ps3 for everything, BBC Iplayer (If your British, I actually watch most of my tv this way or on 4 On-Demand using the browser) the Vidzone (Not sure if it's available in the US but it's very good) to play old classic games, all Multiplat gaming (Mostly because I dont have x-box live) etc etc.

the slim plays ps3 and ps1 games but not ps2, if you want one that plays the ps2 games too you'll have to dish out the extra cash for a bigger, more power used, smaller harddrive system

Only 20gb, 60gb and some 80gb big PS3s are. No new small/Slim ones are. PS3 games are way-way-way better than PS1 and PS2 games, so if you get one you'll just stop playing the old games. Be sure to use an HD TV and an HDMI cable.

I don't understand why people care if it's BC or not. Just use your PS2 to play those games and use the PS3 for PS3 games. What's the big deal?!

I don't know why a person's decision on whether to buy a PS3 or not would hinge on PS2 bc. You should buy a PS3 because you want to play PS3 games. If you really want to play PS2 games, buy a PS2, they're cheap these days, especially if you look on Ebay/Craigslist.

Mine plays ps2 games, do my laundry, clean the house, change the oil to my car, it floats, and much more. It also does my work so I can spend my office hours on youtube.

My decision doesn't "hinge" on backwards compatibility, but it certainly would give me enough reason to buy a PS3 sooner than later.

I own a PS1...I also own a PS2...both of which are no longer working.

Here's the thing though...I'm half way through Dragon Warrior 7 (PS1) and my daughter want Little Big Planet (PS3)...the PS3 is more than capable of playing PS1 and PS2 games...but it won't? Well that's just lazy and deliberate if that's really the case.

Not to bring console comparisons into it, but the Xbox360 plays Xbox games, and the Wii (yes, even the Wii) plays Gamecube games (don't even start on the different console emulations that the Wii also does on the Virtual Console). Even a Blu-Ray player will play standard DVD's...etc., etc.,

I'm just saying, a company can't claim that their product "does everything" if they deliberately ensure that it does not.

What were sony thinking about not making the ps3 backwards compatible. They taught people would still buy PS2's. Well Everybody's got them.

It can play PS1 games, but to play PS2 games you'll have to buy a $100 addon called the PS2. :P

Yea the PS3 slim can't play ps2 games. I think the only ps3 can play ps2 games are consoles that are released in 2007, 2006 (1st and 2 generation).

This thread is dead. Go to Wikipedia where it lists backwards compatible models. And P.S. it is just silly to take a marketing statement that says it will "do everything" and hold them to whatever you want. Read up and you will see the issues with emulation and why Sony went from hardware emulation to software emulation to eventually phasing it out. I personally prefer the drop in emulation in favor of cheaper PS3's.

Should have bought it at launch. The PS3s were better back then. They may have been bigger, but they were shiny. And they could play PS2 games. Plus if you used the other OS feature and installed PSUbuntu and got a bigger hard drive you really could do everything. =D

Mine reads minds...but not ps2 BC yet...

Hopefully a simple software update will fix this. Id even pay like 10 bucks for it. I assume this will come around the time that the ps2 looses steam and they stop selling... they will do this
