I don't know why a person's decision on whether to buy a PS3 or not would hinge on PS2 bc. You should buy a PS3 because you want to play PS3 games. If you really want to play PS2 games, buy a PS2, they're cheap these days, especially if you look on Ebay/Craigslist.

My decision doesn't "hinge" on backwards compatibility, but it certainly would give me enough reason to buy a PS3 sooner than later.
I own a PS1...I also own a PS2...both of which are no longer working.
Here's the thing though...I'm half way through Dragon Warrior 7 (PS1) and my daughter want Little Big Planet (PS3)...the PS3 is more than capable of playing PS1 and PS2 games...but it won't? Well that's just lazy and deliberate if that's really the case.
Not to bring console comparisons into it, but the Xbox360 plays Xbox games, and the Wii (yes, even the Wii) plays Gamecube games (don't even start on the different console emulations that the Wii also does on the Virtual Console). Even a Blu-Ray player will play standard DVD's...etc., etc.,
I'm just saying, a company can't claim that their product "does everything" if they deliberately ensure that it does not.
