It looks like Sony have some dodgy optical drives in the 40 GB model. My friends at work died on him, it's happened to you, and it's happening to a lot of other people on this forum. The common thing I'm noticing with these "PS3 doesn't read media" threads is the PS3 is usually a 40 GB model. I'm sorry to hear about your issue, but other than venting you'll get nothing here. So call Sony and get your machine replaced, if that's not the outcome you want speak to whomever you need to so you can get your money back.

I have a 60GB PS3 and my disk drive doesn't play any disks anymore. It all started a couple days ago with MLB 08 the show when the game would freeze during loading then it got progressively worse over the last two days. Now it's to the point where I might be able to play a game for 15 to 20 min. then the game freezes and then no disk (PS1,PS2,CD,DVD,BD) wont even load at all. Fortunately I was smart enough to buy a 3-year extended warranty through Target so I called them today and they are sending labels etc. to ship it to them to get fixed. I don't know what it is about Sony and disk drives but every Playstation console had disk drive problems and I guess the PS3 is following suite... The PS1 had the issue with the laser lens track wearing out, the PS2 had the disk read errors and now all out disk drive failure is an issue with the PS3. Why is it so hard for Sony, a hardware manufacturer by trade to make a disk drive that works reliably for the life of the product with normal wear?

That just happened recently to a friend of mines who own a 40gb ps3. Says the game just blanked out while playing COD4 and when he restarted it, it said disk error 800 and something w/e and the ps3 stopped reading disks.

I hope the PS4 doesn't have a disk drive and we just DL game to a HDD cause Sony has a track record of faulty disk drives with PS consoles.

Better hope the PS4 has a solid state drive then, because hard drives fail all the time. :)

Maybe, but I've had the same HDD in my PC for over 5 years now. :) I think the issue here may be the fact that every PS console has had a new and unproven disk drive technology. Hopefully Blu-Ray will stick around for awhile so the PS4 wont have another new unproven media drive in it and hopefully that will mean a more reliable disk drive.

ATTENTION: I have had the same problem with my 40gb whereas it wont play any disk and just has the spining thing in the top corner. It is out of warranty and i have no reciept however I called SONY customer care uk about the issue on08705 111 999.

They asked a few questions and asked for the serial no and then just said that they would deliver a replacement console, for free, in 8 days time. I couldn't believe how easy it was. they did asked roughly when i got the console to which i lied and said about a year ago which in fact it was 18 months. no checks and no fuss. Please dont waste your time or money getting it repaired - good luck.

This happened to me earlier this year with my 60GB... Put a disk in and nothing happened. Had to send it in, and I ended up buying a 40GB and selling the 60GB... No problems with the 40GB so far (fingers crossed).

What a waste of a company. I originally purchased a ps3 back in Dec 2007, with-in one year it died. I blamed that on my negligence because of a power surge, got a new one (refurbished). With-in five months, this "factory approved" not my ps3, fixed problem of someone else refuses to read my game discs. Since I was out of the "90 day warranty" I now have to pay 150. I will never purchase a sony piece of equipment again. My only regret is that I let my nintendo wii collect dusk for the wasted ps3. I am sure many people feel this way and should spread the word. These major companies think they can just bully the regular consumer with policies, thanks for caring SONY....

I got a 60gb PS3 and i have no issues. I got mine used, so it is roughly 2 years old. Mine reads everything quickly! I have been thinking of putting in a new HDD. (maybe 500GB)

I wonder if it has something to do with the actual MLB 08 the Show game on the 60 GB model. I'm nervous now after reading your story that my PS3 will begin to decline as my PS3 froze as well after I put in the exact same game. It just stuck on the start button screen. After coming back in the room 10 minutes later I realized nothing was happening. I called Sony tech support (which really tried to help) but nothing solved the problem. I even tried to do a full system restore to no avail. If anyone has similar stories with a solution please share!

My 60 gig system hasen't failed yet but when ever does I will fix the thing. You can purchase the parts from various web sites if they fail (the Blu-Ray drive repair kit is very inexpensive).

If your PS3 will not read games it is down to the laser coming away. It needs readjusting. The good news is that normally you do not need to replace the drive! You can see a full explanation of why this happens and what you can do to fix it here: http://www.ylodrepairwizard.com/blog/ps3-disc-reading-problems/ps3-will-not-read-games-%E2%80%93-fix-the-ps3-disc-reading-problems/ Or you can send it in and it will cost $150 to get the problem fixed.
