A guy is selling his 40gb PS3 but it doesn't play games, only music and dvds. He said that it stopped playing games over time due to changes in humidity, dryness, etc. Is this a common problem, can it be fixed and is it covered under warranty through sony as the guy doesn't have a receipt but bought it about 6 months ago.

They can check via serial number. So if the Ps3 has a serial number on it, they can look up the date it was manufactured. So just have him call Sony up, give them the serial number, and they will tell him what he can do either have it repaired or what have you.

Im pretty sure buying something second hand voids your warranty anyway, seen a couple of threads about the problem here and their only solution was to send it back to Sony i believe.

You need a receipt or some sort of proof of purchase for them to honor the warranty. My advice is don't buy a PS3 that doesn't play games.

my interest in it is so i could have a $100 blu-ray player. that's too bad you need a receipt and buying used voids the warranty.

i wouldnt think it would void your warranty unless the guy modded it in some way, as long as he has the reciept i dont see what the problem would be really

From a tech standpoint, that doesn't make any sense.

Edited: Confused the warrenties. I was transfered from Media, Customer Service, and then Wireless(Wireless Expert) and the warranty I was thinking of was in reference to a cell phone. I spent hours dedicating my time to that position and unfortunatly, playing COD4 and being thats the last thing I remembered to my soul from my job, I posted the wrong warranty. My fault.

You don't need a receipt. You only need a receipt when your recieving a credit towards a vouchure to trade it in at the place of buisness you bought it at. I use to work at best buy, and if you own a console regardless of purchase, you have to refer to the Manufacturer and they check the serial number to see when the unit was built to find out if it's still under the 1 year warranty. You could provide a receipt if you by some chance scratch off your serial number, but you will still have to find a way to get the serial number associated with that console. But the only way to void a warranty is to open/modify/or use it in a way not intended(other than it breaking on it's own). Because you can buy a ps3 off ebay and as long as it was within 1 year of production, they will honor it(and ebay doesn't give you receipts). Because you can give them the receipt, then mail them the console and they could say "hey this console doesn't match your serial number" and you can say all you want, but if that serial has a problem attached to it you gotta pay to fix it. I wouldn't buy a defective Ps3 either.

Wrong.

SCEA requires a receipt in most cases to send in the system for service for in-warranty. Otherwise, you're paying out $149 to have it fixed. BTW, scratching off a serial number will completely void service... period. That means, you won't even be able to send it in for the $149.00 aka you're S.O.L. and will need to buy a new system.

*slams head against desk* I did not just see this statement. you obviously don't read warranty information on consoles do you? plus, if you hung out at the Playstation Underground, you have no idea how many people would be attacking this comment.

Well your wright. My bad. disregard my whole statement. I got the warranties confused with another manufacturer. Disregard my statement. I was confusing it with motorola. When I bought my Razor from this shop and I sent it to them for service, they matches the serial with the IMEI and was able to perform service on it. I knew the Sony LHW, but was just thinking about another company, my apologies.

I SERIOUSLY have to stop playing COD4 and posting on the forums at the same time. It's really messing with my train of throught and judgement.

I just got off the phone with sony and they said you need a receipt and yes the guy said that it plays blu-ray movies. i'm going to pass though, just not worth the risk right now. While I only want a blu-ray player now, eventually the ps3 may actually get a game or two that would interest me.

I do know the warranty, I was playing COD4 and got the cell phone warranties confused with the console warranties. I was very dedicated to being Wireless Expert(before BBM) and that was the last warranty I knew best and to my heart. Being that I am playing COD4 at this very moment, I often put my foot in my mouth so to speak being that I'm focused on that mainly. Disregard my statement. Just a mix up. And I do hang out on the PSU forums. I just wasn't paying attention.

That almost happened to my ps2 when i went to Puerto Rico like 3 years. I was staying at my dads house and i had the ps2 on the living room but then i put in my room next to the AC (my stupid ass). So the ps2 was getting hit by cold air the whole night (this was summer time) then the next day at noon I was gonna play and it wouldnt play my games and the ps2 was cold so i opened it up (sort of) and started missing with it and then i just left it in front of the fan and it work after that.

Well i really dont know how this could help you but i just wanted to share. Well maybe if you give the PSE so time it could start workig again.
