I'm thinking about getting a PS3 sometime this year. Now, the PS2 was, in my opinion, arguably one of the best systems of all time, but the hardware quality was horrendous (and don't even get me started on the 360)! So my question is, are there any issues with PS3 hardware quality? Now, I know there's always going to be SOME defective devices, but if it's anything close to the PS2 or 360, I'll be waiting even longer to leap into the next gen.

EDIT: I recall that there were some issues with the controllers occasionally and randomly disconnecting during the PS3s early months. Is this still an issue?(See 6.6 in this FAQ)

I know with the PS2 you got the lens error (I never got this and owned a PS2 since launch). I left my PS3 for a week with a game playing inside, nothing happened. It's a pretty durable system, but lately people are saying there PS3 blu-ray lens aren't reading anymore. I think most of these cases are false because the statically value of these many PS3 failing were EXTREMELY low percentile (below 5% I remember). So the PS3 is pretty sweet.

That's good to hear. The PS1 (needing to be played while upside-down) and the PS2 (disc read errors) had me nervous, but so far so good!

Yellow light means your HDD is disconnected.

Never. Thats unheard of.

I do remember reading about it, but that may have been in the un-finalized version.

EDIT: I think it was EGM, but check out 6.6 in this FAQ.

I own about 18 games or so, the only game that has ever froze for me was Madden. However from my understanding, that is quite common with Madden and is not an issue with the Playstation 3 itself. I've never had problems reading discs or anything, no controller disconnections, no freezing.

Mine is great. It has frozen a couple of times, but it was nothing serious. In my opinion. Not the the system but the game. PS3 has the best hardware except for the graphics card. I don't see any difference between Splinter Cell Double Agent and MGS4. The newer model has a better fan than the original. It never heats up on the side and you don't have to have it in the open to play it. P.S... My first PS2 finally broke down after 4years running. Longer than most 360s.

I'm new to PS3. Guest what? I have accidently quit game (Call Of Duty World At War) to the XMB while it was loading and my PS suddenly shut down. Is this normal or is it bad?It happen sometimes when I quit while the game was loading. But only experience freeze once while playing fallout 3.

The failure rate on the PS3's is like no other system. There really isn't many problems with these consoles, there may be a few here and there, but it's nothing compared to other consoles. Me and my friends have not experienced any major problems, only a couple time it froze but that's it.

My PS3 is proof that Sony beats MS at hardware hands down. Just with Folding@Home, I am up to 1367 workunits. figure at an average of 6 hours per WU, we are looking at about 8202 hours of run-time. No issues whatsoever. 8200 hours of run-time with a 360 means your on your 4th or 5th 360 (they simply cant take the use).

I know I will get dinged by the GS forum police, but I don't really care. Cant see how stating a proven fact is flaming.

If your looking for the superior machine, get the PS3, its had a slow start but its advantage in storage (Blu-Ray) and power (The Cell) will really start to show, very soon.
