I live in Japan and just bought a PS3 to go with my Sony Bravia KDL-40W5000.

It's a full HD screen so I got a HDMI cable and downloaded the latest PS3 upgrade that allows DIVX.

However, the quality of the 'upscaling' through the PS3 is quite poor on my DIVX discs, resulting in a poorer picture than on my older TV.

The DiVX files are all DVD quality rips and looked great on my older 29" screen.

Is the loss of quality normal for a much bigger screen, or is there some setting/fiddling I can do in the menu to improve the quality of the picture?

Just shed a bundle on the telly/console, so any help here would be great.

Welcome to the world of trying to put non-HD material on a big screen HDTV. Standard definition stuff just doesn't look that great. You say your Divx stuff is DVD quality, but it isn't really DVD quality. It is close to DVD quality I'm sure.

That is why I'm glad DirecTV started offering so many HD channels. I couldn't stand watching SD channels on my 50" HDTV. Looks like garbage.

DVD quality should look fine. Mr b - you can't compare regular SD broadcasting to a DVD especially not SD broadcast that goes through a crappy digital box.

I haven't tried the divx upscaling so can't really help there yoey. However, it will look worse on a big screen than a 29 inch. That is just the result of blowing it up on a bigger screen. Regular dvd's look great through the upscaling so it is either the divx that is causing issues or a setting that you have - what resolutions have you set the ps3 to output? Did you set it to output in HD?

Yeah um, does ps3 upscale DIVX or DVD only. I am not sure abou that part. But even if it does it just won't look as good as hi-def files cause blu-ray has resolution of 1920 by 1080 and DVD has 704 by 5something can't remember. Upscaling does make it look better but not by a lot.

Yes, it's output is full 1080 through HDMI.

The files are watchable, just not great.

I've been trying lots of different files to see which ones work and don't, but Sony's 2GB DivX cap per file doesn't help.

Any film of 720p runs over 2GBs so you end up with the last twenty minutes or so of great looking rips being cut off.

And as for .mkv files.......what a pain.

On a screen over about 40 inches the quality of upscaled material loses it's quality and when there on a screen that's smaller than 40 inches it looks a lot better. And on the smaller screens the "i" or "p" doesn't make a difference.

^ The "i and p" do make a difference, if you compare them, the "i" doesn't look as good for fast moving things, definately not good for most shooters, and the "p" just looks better and even a bit cleaner.
