Ok i'm not too happy! I exchanged a ps3 unit cause it was freezing a bit too much. I got a new one set it up and turns out it makes a weird noise. Now I noticed this only cause the other one was really quiet. I noticed the noise to come when 1) the yellow hard drive light flickers 2) when there is a cd playing in the dvd-rom. For example, I was playing Fifa, and everytime there is a replay I hear it make a noise and then when it goes back to the game it makes noise and then again during loading. I noticed the same with another game, assassin's creed. The noise is not loud, but if there is no volume, I can hear it make that noise even when i'm sitting at a distance. I know it's not the fan, that runs quite smoothly...

Is this normal or is it my bad luck with any unit i get? I'm really annoyed now with ps3....

any advice.

Its normal. Its the Hard-Drive, not the blu-ray drive. You will eventually stop noticing it entirely.

A little noise is not uncommon,( the disc is spinning at a pretty high rate) the yellow light flashing is indicating the harddrive is reading or writing and if you hear a clicking noise then thats bad. IMO the best thing you can do is just upgrade the hard drive.

That isn't necessary though. :? Hard drives make noise as data is read and written. If it's not execessive (IE, Heard over the noise of your tv at a moderate volume, or begins making unusual clicking/spinning in place noise), It's fine.

I understand, I remember reading on Sony's site (i think) where they recommend people upgrade the hard drive. I have a 40 gig non BC and it would freeze every so often UT3 was practically unplayable. I upgraded the Hard Drive and the freezing is almost non existant as well as quieter. Sony's not putting top of the line drives in. I know it's just my personal exp. but after seeing threads about Infamous freezing makes me wonder if a simple HD upgrade would fix most of that.

Ok so the sound is related to hard drive (a clicking sound most of the time I see HD light). And the blue-ray disc player when the CD is running (like there's some extra force being exerted). It's definitely more than a slight hum. And you can clearly tell i'm not good at explaining those sounds! The only problem is that the unit I previously exchanged had NO such problem! (Except for the damn freezing). I'm still within the 30-day period but I don't want to be red-flagged for exchanging all the defective units at Future Shop..

Look, I'm no expert but I have been working on PC's for years and a Hard Drive that clicks is BAD. If it's just a crunching noise it's probibly OK but I still stand by my theory of upgrading the Hard Drive. As for the Blue Ray Drive a little noise is common. The disc will spin at an idle speed then when accessed will spin faster to read and transfer data. The Disc needs to spin faster when accessing data on twords the outer edge of the disc than it will when accessing data twords the center. Honestly, don't worry about returning the unit as it's your right as a customer. If your worried about it I would take it back explain the situation (to a manager) and see if you can't exchange and hook up the new unit in the store to check it before bringing it home.

ok now that I had no CD playing, the unit was really quiet. It's more the drive player which makes the sound. I'm not talking about the constant humming sound of the fan, but more of a 'ticking' sound everytime a screen loads or changes on the screen. Maybe that is when the disc is spinning faster.

Yes, that's actally what makes the noise. It's something like the youtube sample I posted in this thread: http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=26901776&msg_id=312544125#312544125

Take it back. Clicking is not good no matter where it comes from. It's not worth the risk.
