I didn't see any dust blowing out of the system, so is the "dust cleaning" use case just anecdotal? I imagine that the wear and tear on the fans from doing this probably isn't worth it if you do it too often.

Is that even a feature for the PS3 ? did Sony intend to do this ? I'm kind of worried that it might have a negative effect :S

a bit more explanation, and about how it was discovered could help.

it is cool i have to admit, but what other ways do u guys clean ur fans with ?

I use a swifter duster when it's needed and so far it's worked just fine. I try to get as much of the dust as possible before it works it's way into the console. Ever so often I take and clean all my electronics at the same time to remove any dust or dirt that's inside the electronics.

Maybe someone (not me, of course) should try contacting Sony customer service to see if doing this fan test would fall under any sort of warranty-voiding "tampering" rule.

Yeah, it's probably a feature used for when broken PS3s get sent back to Sony. They probably check to see whether everything is working or not.

Why would it?,i dont think Sony can tell if you did this, it function is amazing, and it doesnt harm you PS3, it does the opposite - cleaning the system from dust! I bet ya that the Sony Service place do this, and one of the first thing they do with the system.

I have a question, are we suppose to dust the back of the PS3 and the front? Im asking this question because in order for me to dust the back of my PS3, I have to unplug all the wires attached to the PS3 and take it out and I dont want to do that every single time I dust. I only dust the front of the PS3 where all the vents are. I have never dust the back of my PS3. Does it really matter if we dust the back vents and does the dust mostly go in the back vents? Im afraid that if I dont dust the back once in a while, dust are going to collect in the back and clog the PS3.

I use canned air.. You can get a 4 pack at Costco for about $10. 4 cans will last you over a year. I unplug the power from my PS3 then just blow a few puffs into all the vents about once a month or so.

it would be wise to unplug the wires and dust the back considering it only takes a few seconds to unplug it. should clean the ps3 once a week depending on amount of usage

No it's completley illegal as it draws more current from the mains that the US law allows, it's also highly traceable so yeah use at your own risk.

In all seriousness this is something that sony implemented into the model, it's not going to break it, it's definatley not illegal. It's simply a test that puts all your fans in the PS3 at 100%, much like when you first start up a PC all the fines work at 100% for a short amount of time.

YES, mine cranks into high gear every time I play CoD4. It stays on until I stop playing. It actually warms my room enough to make it way too hot and force me to open a door.

mine just did get that loud when I was playing mgs. Whenit first happend I freaked cause it sounded like a lawnmower, so I did the vaccuum electronic duster thing and left it of for about 2hrs. got back on played mgs again then realized that I had to start from the first communications tower again cause I forgot to save. about 3 hours later it did the same thing so I shut it off waited about 10 minutes then turned it back on and played oblivion for 3 hours, no hardcore fan going on so I think my launch 60gb can't handle mgs :(

Maybe there is some dust in ur PS3, try using a vacuum to clean it out and then see if it happens again.
