If your talking about just turning the PS3 off by turning off the system using the PS button then no. I don't think it would do anything to the hardware on your PS3. I barely play mine that much, haven't really seen any games out yet since Metal Gear Solid 4 (really good game). Other than that I leave my off but the red light stays on.

Only problem I have with mine is that it makes random popping sounds, but it's done that since I bought it.

I doubt that leaving your ps3 off for a long time will cause hardware problems. I did not play my ps3 for a couple of weeks due to school and exams, and it's working just fine. Just make sure you prevent dust from collecting because the ps3 is known to be dust depositories. I've heard cases where it would freeze simply because of excessive amounts of dust. Also, I think dust voids the ps3 warranty. You can't avoid all the dust particles but the best way to keep your ps3 safe is to put a cloth over it or put it back in the box. Also, turning on your ps3 once in a while won't hurt...

What I usually do is when I am finished playing I turn it off completely at the switch (Saving the World). But if I am downloading something I turn off my TV and just leave my PS3 on and go out or whatever so that my PS3 is actually doing something instead of just lying there asleep :D

Just unplug the power cord when you are not playing for long durations of time.
