So I'm looking on craigslist to try and get a PS3(selling my 360 for it :) ). And I was wondering if the older "fat" models have any major problems, or do they fail more often, etc. If somebody could give me a brief rundown of the different models that would be great. Thanks guys!

Just get a slim. They're more reliable, sleeker, quieter, etc... overall, just a better model. I know that's not really the kind of answer you're looking for, but I traded my phat for a slim and never regretted it. Otherwise: look here

The good thing about the fats its the BC, so if you got PS2 games its something to consider. But its general knowledge they can break down easily i believe, idk if its really true but honestly, you should get a new one IMO, used stuff if always fishy, better save the money and get a new one on xmas.

Well for the simple fact that there probably maybe all destined to YLOD in the near future. I wouldn't bother.

My fat model ylod 'd after about 3-4 years. Just upgraded to the new 320gb slim. The only thing the fat was good for was back compatability but I dont find myself playing my ps2 games that often. I would advise a slim if you arent massivly bothered about no BC.

The newer models are better designed...and for good reason, to fix the electronic component mess inside the original models. Anyone with an electrical engineering background knows this. Not all phat systems are bad...just the original models with backwards compatibility. And quite frankly, the ps2 systems are so cheap and reliable its worth it to play pS2 games on the console they were designed for anyways.

PS3 Slim

  1. save electricty
  2. Will last longer
  3. makes less heat and not need to worry as much about better ventalation
  4. New consoles have 40nm RSX and 45nm Cell.
