PS3 Firmware 3.0 - Grief reporting, reputation system, background patches, multiple audio outputs, more

VG247 has learnt that PS3 Firmware 3.0, "a completely new system" for the console, is to release pre-Christmas with a raft of major feature updates.

The software upgrade has been described to us as "a huge overhaul", and was compared to NXE "in some respects".

The before-rumoured reputation system will be included. We were told that, "A reputation system in which users will be able to evaluate each other will be provided for... game applications.

"There will be a new API available to so the user can... allow users and also obtain users' reputation."

A "grief reporting system" will be included in the update, allowing gamers to take screens of offensive players and submit them to Sony. Apparently this is going to be similar to the LBP system, and is likely to include a text input.

Firmware 3.0 will allow patches will be downloaded in the background, meaning you'll no longer have to sit staring at the screen while Random Shooter updates itself with a 500Mb fix.

There's more. Simultaneous HDMI and digital optical outputting will be included in the release, a move likely to bring big smiles to the audio heads in the crowd.

We've been told a lot more on this, but you'll just have to wait. Rest assured, 3.0 will be significant. Just remember where you heard it first.

I like the grief reporting idea.

Should be interesting when it comes out. Hopefully it doesn't cause a lot of headaches with people reporting others when it's not really necessary, but we'll see I guess. The being able to get the patches in the background while you play with be an awesome update though. it's a little annoying having to sit and wait on the patch to download before you get to play.

What if someone is reporting a hacker when the guy they're reporting is just genuinely good?

yay for continual, free software updates. This is how you support your products, other companies ought to sit up and take notice of how it's done. I particularly like the grief reporting system which would deal well with the occasional hacker that you get on PSN.thekodaman

Why the hell does the PS3 want to be the Box. (its pointless) Sony keeps playing catch... For more useless features! The only things that could improve the PS3 is an updated browser; more Hdd space; and simplify the menus and features. Anyway, the 'reputation' thing sounds bad. Giving players the ability to rank eachother could be a disaster. Some 360 fans could jump on there and give everybody a NOOB rank just for the fun of it. So, what would be the point?Nephilim83

I have a feeling that whole "reporting" system will be abused to high hell by all of the whiners that get killed in FPS games and so on.

Background downloads are good, but that means they will be even slower and I don't think anybody wants that. The Reporting Grief thing I don't know how will work, will they ban you from PSN is you're being a bit mean or just suspend you? If theydo decide to bring the reporting system in and they can ban you from PSN,that would be really, really lame.

Dont get your hopes up guys, otherwise your in store for some serious disappointment. I remember all the speculation and rumors cirulating for 2.0 you would swear it was going to be the second coming of Christ. If cross game chat, cross game invites and 60 sec voice message clips are not part of the next major update will be a failure in almost every ones eyes. Especially if they are going to take 6 months to release it to the public. I give MS credit because when they release a firmware update its usually pretty big with lots of new things.

I just do the updates and enjoy what's there if it's something I find enjoyable.

Can't wait. I forgot 360 had a reputation system. people will most likely lower your reputation for beating them. I also want cross-games voice chat just please!!!josh494
