I was wondering, what are some good PS3 games out there that feature girls as the main characters? I have a few PS3 games now and most of them have male leads but a couple have playable female characters (all of them are just in sidekick roles though, except one where you can create your own character). I just want a couple of games with a leading lady to play as (I'm a guy btw). The only two I know of are Heavenly Sword and Bayonetta, but are there any others out there?

I remember there's a new Tomb Raider that's supposed to come out later this year, I think it's a prequel to all the other games. I've never played the Tomb Raider games before but I'm thinking about getting this one because I like the graphics and the way Lara Croft looks dirty and battered. I'm expecting it to be an intense game about survival.

You're a courrier who uses parkour (speed running across rooftops, up walls, and the like) to make your way across the city. Very fluid first-person play, and one of the fairly unique games you'll find on the system.

I would say you should check out "Heavenly Sword" which is akin to the God of War series, with fluid combo system and stuff, also, I must INSIST that you download "Beyond Good & Evil HD" from PSN. Jade is the best female protagonist out there, and the game will melt your heart as well as make you laugh. One of the few games I will ascribe "Perfect Experience All-Around" to.

"Tomb Raider Trilogy" is highly recommended, those games are Lara Croft done right.

Mass Effect series and Dragon Age II both have options for female leads, plus they have their own voice work as well.

I'm really looking more for games that star one girl in the spotlight, not so much the games that give you the option to be male or female. I will keep those in mind though because I've heard of them and they sound interesting.

Hope you like sight gags and dialogue centered around her vagina.

:?

It's a good action game, don't get me wrong, but the rampant over-the-top sexuality for no apparent reason sort of turned me off... And I'm a red-blooded heterosexual male who loves him some girl-parts... But it didn't seem to be pertinent in any way aside from "Hey, here's another vagina reference & a chance to show Bayonetta spread her legs as wide as Montana". The Japanese can be very strange, sometimes.

EDIT: And for the record, I felt the same way about the penis stuff in "Shadows of the Damned".

I think that's kinda the entire joke is that is SO ridiculous and over-the-top. Also, there's hardly any vagina references that I can really think of. It's more just pure insanity in that game with an overtly sexual female main character.

But in those games, their main characters are in the spotlight. If you pick to play as Female Shepard in Mass Effect, the game doesn't seem like it's awkwardly fitting in a female protagonist just for the sake of gender equality. FemShep is a total badass, at least my FemShep is plus I like her voice a lot better than Male Shepard's.

Ah OK, maybe I will try Mass Effect then. I agree that most games that let you create your character always feel like they're supposed to be more about the guy than the girl. It's nice to see a game that lets you create a female character for a purely female role in the story.

As for Bayonetta, I'm fine with the overtly-sexualized concept of the character. Personally speaking I don't find her to be that sexy looking, but I love cheesy over-the-top action games and movies. So I think I'll be fine with it. :)

Bit of an outside choice but Heavy Rain features both male and female protagonists. As well as being a fairly unique gaming experience. I also reckon Sackboy from LBP is fairly androgynous, despite having the suffix 'boy' in its name haha. Put a wig on him and you've got 'Ms Sackboy'.

I actually have all three Uncharted games. In fact I have the Game of the Year addition of Uncharted 2 which adds a new girl named Rika to the cast of female characters. Elena, Chloe, and Rika are all cool, I think I like Rika the best though.

GreySun369

No. No it reaaaaallly isnt.

I have to say I agree with others that have complained about the over-sexualisation of women in computer games. If they arent in distress, theyre slutty villains. And they aaaalll have impractically huge breasts

Mass Effect and Final Fantasy both contain some well written parts for women, but even the central characters are all men. And I say this all as a male myself, albeit raised in a family full of feminists haha

I was raised by a feminist single mother, so I know what you mean. :)

But honestly I can go both ways, I can appreciate either an overly-sexualized femme fatale or a down-to-earth plain jane tomboy. It just depends on how she's handled as a character. I don't like women that are thrown into a story without much purpose other than to serve as meaningless eye candy or to prove that the story isn't sexist.

Mirrors Edge was wicked fun! I have it on the PC but would recommend it to everyone pretty much. Most people seem to get frustrated with it early on but if you can get into it it's really awesome and there isen't really anything else like it.

Aha, feminist mother and father here and 3 older feminist sisters. In my house you appreciate women or die haha

And yes, exactly, and the latter 2 instances are pretty much 99% of gamings female characters. Problem is you never get genuinely proven writers penning computer games, its usually just some weak banter between gunfights.

Pickings are even slimmer when it comes to playable female characters. FemShep and AC's Catwoman are the best recent examples I can think of.

Well it seems like quality playable female characters are a rarity in video games these days. It's not just the sexual factor, but they always seem to make the females inferior to the males in some way like giving them less missions or weaker stats, or making it to where you have to beat the game as the male character first just to play as her. I don't really mind female characters being sexy, but I like for them to be just as tough and important to the story as the male characters. Anyways this is kind of the reason why I'm looking for games with female characters as the only leads, because in these games the women get to be the strongest fighters because they don't have a male character to compete against and their backgrounds gets explored more.

There's also Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City which my friend has been telling me about a lot. I'm not sure if I'll like it as much as the other Resident Evil games, but it seems to have a pretty good balance of male and female characters: 3 of each for the good team and bad teams. The female characters in this game don't really seem slutty, they actually look pretty badass. I like that Japanese chick from the evil team who's a scientist and likes to experiment on zombies and mutants while she's combating them.

You could always just get a solid RPG and create a female character, theres much less likely to be an explicit gender hierarchy there.

Maybe try Heavenly Sword? That was made by a British company so you've got alot less of the whole impractically curvy woman doing backflips in a suggestive manner than you get with Japanese/American games.

Like I said before I don't mind the over-sexualization of female characters in games, what I do mind is when they're not given as much importance to the game as the male characters. Like for example in Resident Evil 5 despite the fact that Sheva was a playable female character in the main game she was still pretty much treated as a secondary sidekick character, the game was mostly about Chris and his views on the events in the game. Plus you were forced to play as him first, Sheva has to be unlocked after beating the game once. or another good example is the issue I have with the playable female characters in Siren Blood Curse. They really suck compared to the male characters because not a single one gets to use any firearms and they can only pick up "small" melee weapons.

As for RPGs that let you create your own character, the problem I have with them is that the majority of them have a story that always seems to be written for a male protagonist. Fallout 3 is a good example of this.

No I registered your complaints with the roles women play in games being the real issue, I just merely meant theres no tongue in cheek element to Heavenly Sword which I found refreshing.

Frankly it sounds like you should just buy ME/ME2 and play as FemShep.

Ah OK, I guess I misunderstood what you meant by that last post.

I will try Mass Effect some day because I heard it's a great game, I'll probably play as both male Shepherd and female Shepherd just to see how they play differently. :)

Im led to believe the differences are purely aesthetic. FemShep is just a prettier package.

I good one is Resonance of Fate I just started it a few days ago. Theres two guys and one girl but whats nice is you can choose to run around as a girl (that sounded weird). The girl Leanne so far is a solid character that is just your typical average girl thats very realistic and wears normal clothes.

And as far as animated shows go Korra will pwn everything.

Well anyways what I'm really looking for is games that star only female characters. I have enough games that star just men or men and women, I just want to play as a badass heroine who can kick some butt without the help of a man. :P

You guys gave me some really good suggestions so I've decided on Heavenly Sword, Bayonetta, the Tomb Raider games, and Mirror's Edge. I probably won't be able to get all of them at once but whenever I get the chance to go to the mall I will be on the lookout for these games. Thanks guys. :)
