is it normal for the ps3 to increase its fan after playing games for a while, it happens gta4, but i havent noticed it on cod4. How long should i ps3 be on everyday on average to keep it healthy. And should i get any like fans or any attachments?

happens to me when i play GTA4 for more than 5 hours (I never do but I sometimes leave my PS3 running for along time and resume playing later) or when i play over 4 hours for 3 days straight. Don't play as much and it won't happen - but it's really not a big deal.

Its overhated and turned itself off, the 360 probley woud have just fried. Just leave it to cool down a bit. My fan goes really loud when its hot, helps to have doors and windows open to help circulate the hot air.

lol, don't ever do that to a PS3 again. you basically just executed it by doing that. the PS3 was made to run for long periods of time, so long as you have good ventilation for it & are blessed with non-defective hardware. but never do that again.

If you wanted to you can leave it on for a month if not more. Theres really no overheating issue with the PS3, unless its just specificly somthing wrong with your ps3.

I am just guessing but that was prolly a bad move. It prolly trapped the heat in the system.

The Ps3's fan kicks in after awhile. This is normal. Its a much better way of dispersing heat than the 360's hot box. If your PS3 is kicking out hot air out of the back of the system, then its doing fine. Thats the main sign that the fans are doing their jobs.

ok i removed the protective covering, should i have my ps3 standing or horizontal because i read somewhere that the 360 is better in the lay down position because it takes longer to heat up, maybe the same applies to the ps3?

I have mine horizontal. But im not sure? Its not really that big of a deal. With a PS3 you can kinda get out of that "Oh I have to diaper it, constant worry mode lol." That your used to being in. So you'll be fine. Im sure one is better than the other. But its built well. you should be fine.

Don't worry about overheating, the PS3 is built like a **** tank. It can withstand extremem temperature lol.

http://www.geek.com/ps3-endures-in-temperature-testing/

Sure it is well known that the Xbox 360 has had its share of overheating problems (see our feature), but how does the Sony PlayStation 3 hold up to temperature extremes? Well, if we are to believe what we are hearing from the PS3 Vault website, the answer is the PS3 handles temperature extremes pretty freaking well.

In three rounds of testing, separate PS3s were subjected to 108 hours of game play and Blu-ray movies in different environments. The locations were a standard living room, the back of a freezer van, and the inside of a hot sauna-the screen and controllers were routed outside of the freezer van and sauna for the duration of the testing.

In living room testing, the only glitch reported for the console in 108 hours was a vibration in the disc tray. This apparently only lasted 20 seconds during the 12th hour of testing, with no other incidents reported. In the freezer test, the temperature was started at 50 degrees Fahrenheit and reduced to 0 degrees during the 108 hours. Except for sluggish behavior at 0 degrees and condensation on the video cord causing a video blackout, the console kept on running. In the sauna test, the temperature was started at 100 degrees and moved up to 120 during the last 24 hours of the test. Amazingly, the only reported incidents during the sauna test was a burning smell at hour 64 and a very hot console at the the end of the test. Otherwise, the PS3 console operated normally.

It sure must be nice to have that kind of disposable income to risk utter destruction of several PS3s. Can't say I'm willing to repeat these tests myself. I'll just try and kill gaming consoles the old fashioned way by playing them until they break.

I haven't turned my PS3 off in months and sometimes I will have a game paused for hours while watching a TV peogram and forget I have the system paused. I have never had a over heating problem that shut it down, although when I had it in a cabinet someone accidently closed the door and the fan kicked on to the highest speed.

Not really because when I don't have any game or movie running I just let the system fold (over 800 work units so far).
