PS3 Getting DVD Upscaling. Wow, what a News days.

In concluding his marathon interview with N'Gai Croal, Phil Harrison let slip that the PS3 was soon going to feature DVD upscaling.

I think in order to engender trust in our users, we have to share some things that might be not quite perfect, but are ready to give you an indication of what's coming. So we could say, "You know, we're not sure when it's coming, but we're going to have DVD upscaling on Playstation 3." There you go. There's a scoop for you.

Awesome news, but wouldn't this sort of be a bad thing for Blu-Ray sales. Why repurchase older movies if they can be seen in HD through upscaling. Also if it works for movies how about some Bully, FFXII, and GoW2 in glorious 720p.dru26

I don't understand the dvd upscaling issue.  It's not a huge feature in my opinion.  First off, upscaling doesn't automatically improve the picture to Bluray quality.  It's like taking a digital picture and blowing it up.  The source material wasn't HD so the upscaled picture isn't either.

The original reasons for upscaling were so you can eliminate the TV having to the scaling.  Back then the thinking was that dedicated scalers were better then the internal scaler of the TV.  So the only benefit I would see is if the PS3 is better at scaling then your TV.  If not, then it's a moot point and if it's worse then it's a disadvantage as a lot of TV scalers are pretty damn good now.
