Again, coming from Kotaku (well, not exactly originate there, but w/e)

http://kotaku.com/gaming/ps3/ps3-getting-dvd-upscaling-240896.php

For those that's lazy:

Considering there's been "other" Sony-related goings-on today, this has slipped under the radar a bit.

In concluding his marathon interview with N'Gai Croal, Phil Harrison let slip that the PS3 was soon going to feature DVD upscaling.

I think in order to engender trust in our users, we have to share some things that might be not quite perfect, but are ready to give you an indication of what's coming. So we could say, "You know, we're not sure when it's coming, but we're going to have DVD upscaling on Playstation 3." There you go. There's a scoop for you.

Might just be me, but if it's true and not just there to "engender trust", I like. A little spit and polish on the perfectly-fine DVDs I already own will do me just fine, thank you very much Blu-Ray.

IS TODAY AWESOME OR WHAT ?

Awesome news, but wouldn't this sort of be a bad thing for Blu-Ray sales. Why repurchase older movies if they can be seen in HD through upscaling. Also if it works for movies how about some Bully, FFXII, and GoW2 in glorious 720p.

Do i see some PS3 love from Kotaku? Surprising, but it had to happen eventually. Now, if only Gamespot was as fast with the good news like they are with the bad news...

Great news for PS3 owners (but not me....). why do people (xbots) assume that they will have everything set up from day 1? Doesn't anyone feel like the system is rushed to the market to please the fans? I mean, didn't anyone notice almost all its first party games were delayed, so probably they just cobbled together, and suddenly everyone is saying, 'oh the PS3 sux' or whatnot. It doesn't make sense. I don't even have a vested interest in the PS3 as i don't own all 3 next gen systems... just saying ya know as i don't get all the hate.

Upscaling is not the same thing as True HD, the movies are not being displayed in HD they are just being upscaled to HD resoultions, HD tv's do that anyway to some degree, you can't take something that has already been made in 480i and make it HD at 720p all it does is take that 480 image and expaned it to fill 720 lines with some pixels added to fill in any gaps, dont epect the level of detail etc that only true HD on blu-ray can give,

As for gaming it's the same thing although results can be worse as you will notice the low res textures and effects etc much more than you would if they were runnin in their native 480.

Two reasons. One people already have DVD collections and may not be able to afford to rebuild their collection with blu-ray. Two...it will be quite sometime before everyone's favorites make it to blu-ray.

Well I've been complaining a lot about Sony's lack of features since I bought it last month. And I'll be the 1st one to say how greatful I am that they are probably bringing back rumble, improving the low quality DVD playback, and maybe, just maybe adding Miis and achievements. And make no mistake... it was complaints like mine that sent the message to Sony that these things needed to be added. If everyone had just sat on their hands and said "I love the PS3 even without all these things" they might not have happened at all.

Maybe not, but you can't deny that most of your favorite movies aren't available in Blue Ray, and won't be for some time.

I don't understand the dvd upscaling issue.  It's not a huge feature in my opinion.  First off, upscaling doesn't automatically improve the picture to Bluray quality.  It's like taking a digital picture and blowing it up.  The source material wasn't HD so the upscaled picture isn't either.

The original reasons for upscaling were so you can eliminate the TV having to the scaling.  Back then the thinking was that dedicated scalers were better then the internal scaler of the TV.  So the only benefit I would see is if the PS3 is better at scaling then your TV.  If not, then it's a moot point and if it's worse then it's a disadvantage as a lot of TV scalers are pretty damn good now.

I liked this comment:

"It's as if all the good news for PS3 fans got bottlenecked somewhere and, with a cartoony POP sound, it all just got through at the same time."

It's funny because it's true. For some reason, it's been a torrent of awesomeness for PS3 owners lately. And it was just the other day I was beginning to lose faith in Sony. I'm willing to admit I was being a moron. Woo.

With all the power of the PS3 I would rather see Sony take some steps foreward in the normal dvd playback before worrying about upscaling. With a machine like that, we should not have abysmal dvd playback. In fact, I have not seen a standalone player by any major company come anywhere close to how poor the ps3 playback is.

Upscaling should help make DVDs smoother on a large HDTV. But, will the PS3 use special enhancments to reduce artifacts and aliasing like a good upscaling DVD player? Just because a device says it upscales doesn't automatically mean it's the best dvd player ever. Heck, when the Samsung $1000 Blu-ray player came out, it got horrible reviews for it's DVD playback, even upscaled over HDMI. That had nothing to do with being a Blu-ray format player, just the way the player was designed.

So plain upscaling is nothing special if there is nothing else to back it up, like the Faroudja chip in many upscalers, such as the popular Oppo players.

Here's a description from imaging enhancing on real quality upscalers:
""""""""""""""DCDi by Faroudja video processing technology with progressive scan, film mode detection, TrueLifeâ„¢ enhancement and motion adaptive noise reduction. Video is analyzed on a single pixel granularity to detect presence or absence of angled lines and edges, which are then processed to produce a smooth natural looking image without visible artifacts (jaggies). The result is a breath-taking picture with vivid color, fine details, and life-like picture quality."""""""""""""""""

I also have a Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD player, and for it's normal DVD playback it got great reviews as an upscaler, replacing peoples oppo players with ease, except in the unlocked region department that oppos provide. But even then, DVDs can still look bad.

Also, upscaling will work even less for PS2 games, as nothing is going to help reduce jaggies. It's a totally different thing compared to upscaling real video with some noise/artifact reduction.
