Firmware 3.42 - Sony removes the USB functionality of the console. Obviously that'll never happen, I really hope this is fake or like ryrulez said, it's just a de-bugging/devolopers setup.

true but i still think its fake i mean out of all the games on the ps3 library he has mostly games you can get off the psn network and download and he chooses infamous to play, also you know sony probably already know about it right now and are going to send a firmware update.

well the ps3 was hacked earlier this year using an exploit in linux, but i dont think they were able to play a backed up game, which is why sony removed the other OS feature, this new hack seems to use some of the linux exploit hack but without needing linux. Also from what i have read you install a program called "install debug package" so we dont know if he's using a retail or debug/dev kit. For now ill remain skeptic but looks legit

Don't forget about being able to run rogue code using Sony's own scripting language that's required to make dynamic themes work. Removing OtherOS was an over-reaction. and complete **** For that, Sony deserves to be hacked wide open.

Removing OtherOs was not an over-reaction, surprisingly Sony don't want their console to be hacked and costing them millions of dollars from lost sales. Your logic is completely flawed, it's like saying "My next door neighbour had an attempted break in, now they've put steel bars on their window, for that they deserve to be robbed". You clearly don't support the industry, you seem to think Sony and devolopers will forever continue to put in their hard work and effort into something only to be stolen by kids who don't give a damn about how the economy works.

Cant agree more. Piracy would definitely harm the sales of games, meaning developers wont try original games, instead they would only make those mainstream games that would sell anyway. It would probably boost up console sales for a while but in a long run it will only harm the industry. Look at PSP. Even big games struggle to reach sales they deserve.

Flawed logic, the DS and Wii are the most effected by piracy but they still have huge sales.. The PS1 and PS2 were the most pirated consoles in history and they made sold tons of software and broke hardware records.

Did someone call for the "flawed logic" train? There's plenty of material out there to verify that the more "pirated" something is, the more attention it garners, and the more sales it gets. Look at the DS and Wii. Most of these can be easily hacked, yet people buy them in droves anyway. And since Nintendo made the Wii to be profitable from the start, they really couldn't care if you never bought anything else for it again - they already made a profit on the system. The PS1 was able to be "compromised" by simply buying black-bottomed CD-R's and using a well configured copy of CloneCD. There were modchips for the PS2 before the console even came out. Yet both of these systems sold ridiculously well and there were many, many, many million-plus selling hits. Yet look at the current landscape. 360 and Wii can be hacked, but the ps3 has been irritatingly kept out of it. Yet even with the sales surges of new models and the like, the PS3 is still far behind the lead established by its competitors. Even Microsoft confesses that the console bans they've put on modified consoles accounts for less than half a percent of total consoles they've manufactured. Even if we account for say one in five people being interested in modding their consoles, you're looking at more like 1 in six that would be both willing and have the technical savvy to do it. Removing OtherOS is removing a feature I **** paid for, **** . I don't care what their reason is. I bought my PS3 for being able to do everything with it, and among that is running linux. And now that I have a legit reason to go and use this feature, they remove any ability for the console to do it in firmware. And then just to spite us, remove our ability to do anything online with it. Yet they do nothing about the theme scripting that allowed for rogue code. Why? If they wanted to be consistent, their next update would remove the ability to run dynamic themes - because the sploit was based on running the scripting that allows such themes to even work. Deliberately neutering systems and functionality, booming corporate arrogance, and continuing to alienate the people that supported them from the beginning. Sorry, Sony has earned no sympathy with me, and I completely disagree with you defending them.

So blame the people who forced Sony to remove the feature, don't blame Sony themselves for removing a feature that 0.1% of PS3 owners even used. At the end of the day, it's Sonys console, it's Sonys business and they will do whatever they can to minimize loss in earnings.

This argument of OtherOS is so old now.

They will never remove the dynamic theme feature because it's profitable, OtherOS was used be a very smal percentage of PS3 owners.

What? you mean like how they blatantly lied about how each system was costing them so much money to make beyond MSRP to the public, but then would tell stockholders how they're able to make so much profit on each one sold? The same stockholders that created the market crashes that have brought us double-digit unemployment rates? Yea, like I care what stockholders think.

It's still a perfectly valid argument. I paid for the feature, and I have every right to keep this feature. And I shouldn't have to be forced to choose between being able to enjoy full functionality of my console's hardware, and being able to play the newest games or play online, or get demo's to try out for something else I might be interested. You just want to apologize for them because you apparently have a vested interest in helping Sony neuter the system even more, which I fully deject. Profitable or not, OtherOS is a feature worth using, and they had no right or reason to remove it. Nothing that has been done with it has even gone beyond proof-of-concept phase yet. And if it ever did, all Sony would have to do is artificially inflate royalties on bluray drives and media to make it even more prohibitively expensive to buy a bluray burner and blank discs. I support the gaming industry. But Sony has far exceeded their common courtesy on this one.

Why should I be forced to not be able to get demo's or be online because I want to use what the system is capable of doing? THAT is where I have the problem. I paid for the system. I still get a little kick out of the people who complain that DRM prevents you from truly owning something, under the impression that they're truly owning everything else they have, like "features" that were paid for. When they administer the firmware and software that determines what you can or can't do with their system, then they can tell you what you can or can't do with it all day. That's why End User Agreements exist for all products like this. The idea that you can buy something like this and own everything related to it is beyond utopian, has never happened, and will never happen.

also in the agreement sony has the right to terminate your online access at anytime something you agreed too when you signed up for psn

Since I'm too lazy to read right now, what I'm hearing from this thread is "Sony took out the OtherOS feature, so it's only fair that it comes to this". Piracy is what ruined the PSP (Looks at self), don't want it to happen to the PS3, lest it go the way of the dreamcast and lose all third party support.

That's kinda the reason we're pulling it back, to prevent the stealing..." codezer0: "Well now everyone should steal everything from you and not give you any money." Sony: "... ok..." codezer0: "Since you don't want people stealing, and you wanted to remove a feature that enabled people steal, and it's a feature that I wanted, then I think everyone should steal from you." Sounds a tad bit whiny. If you can't get over this sort of thing, stick to PCs.

[QUOTE="codezer0"]It sure needs to be.MushroomWig
No, nothing "needs" to be pirated. If you think that then you should stay away from gaming because this kind of crap will ruin things for a lot of people who support the industry.

You are completely right i really don't know what the hell is inside the brain of MushroomWig. Stealing is stealing, it doesn't matter if you can't touch what you steal. Rampant piracy only brings shovel ware in masses like a system from the competition. Anyway i wonder how many people may be willing to wait for 50gb downloads and wasting money if this became true ( I don't think so).

You're very wise. That's the big problem that cheap and ignorant losers most of them teens and kids don't understand. If you don't want to pay $60 dollars wait for a price drop, if you don't want to buy it then rent it or borrow it from a friend.

It would only increase the sales of the PS3, I dont think it would effect software to much, as PSN is to much of a big feature to lose out on, remember the 360 has been hacked for ages and games still sell great on the system.
