I want to upgrade my HDD for the ps3, but I don't really know anything about it. I know there are videos showing how to change it, so im not "really" concerned about tht at all. I dont know what kind to get, or what to do once i change it. Does the operating system remain in the system? How can i save my games that are already on the ps3 to something so i dont lose them? also the ps2 memory cards i've created? what do i do? thankstonyandsteff
You need a 2.5" SATA 5400RPM HDD (Notebook HDD)...Brand wise, Sony uses Seagate, I prefer Western Digital
Backup the saves on an SD Card...or a USB Flash Drive...PS2 saves...put them on a PS2 memory card unless you can put those on the flash drive as well...
The HDD once installed needs to be formatted and you are prompted to do so once you boot up the PS3...during this process it sets up the OS and restores all your personal settings...

The PS3's OS is stored in memory, not on the HDD. You will not lose the OS if you swap out the HDD. For your games/demos/pictures/videos/etc., you will need to copy them to either an external USB device or to one of the flash memory card slots(if you have a 60GB PS3). If you change the HDD without copying the files off the old drive, you will lose them.
can someone provide a link where i can purchase the largest one available?
i see best buy has a 500 gb but its 7200 rpm... does that matter???
what matters really is the size, your looking at desktop HDD, you need notebook, which are 2.5". you need a SATA interface, 2.5". 5400rpm preferred since that matches the factorycan someone provide a link where i can purchase the largest one available?

what about the 500 gb ones that are 7200 rpm, will they work or not? There's some on ebay that go for around the same price as the links you guys have.

No they will not work...You want an internal HDD correct...if so stop asking about other drives...you only have a few options if you would like sometihng over 100GB..
160GB is as big as its going to get if you want a nice internal HDD
It must be a 2.5" SATA Notebook HDD if you want an internal HDD
again, no, those are not notebook drives, those are for desktops, you need a 2.5" SATA drive, 5400 RPM, and the 8MB cache like f1ipmode saidGzus666I dont think you have any other option as far as cache size is concerned therefore you have little to worry about in that regard
well jwat, last i checked i WAS talking about a 500 gb internal hdd, that was 7200 rpm. Nobody said YET that there wasnt much available over 100 gb, so i was asking. dont tell me not to ask additional questions in my own thread. i want to make sure that if i make a purchase that i'll get what i want, therefore, if i have additional questions, i will ask.tonyandsteffits this simple tony, 2.5", SATA interface, 5400 rpm, these are standard notebook size drives, with a SATA interface, and your done

If you read a little before posting you would understand that you need a 2.5" SATA Notebook HDD...and you then could go to a site like Newegg.com and notice that your options for Internal HDD are limited to 100, 120, 160GB.... I feel like you should understand this much by now...

If the capacity is more than 200GB, then it's not a notebook HDD. so all these questions about 750GB and 500GB drives, they won't work because they are not notebook HDDs. make sure that it states "2.5" "
Its up to you...not us...The only reason I went with a 160GB HDD is because I had $100 left over after buying the 20GB PS3... How many pictures or songs do you plan on adding to your PS3?...I think you will be fine...but if you have the extra cash go for it...look guys i bought the 60gb version of the ps3
do u think i still need to upgrade ma hardrive?////?
dumbfreak89
i dont really have a lot of pics and vids because i mostly use it for gaming .
so should i get it if i have the 60 gb or not
[QUOTE="Coolio_Poolio"]Can you have an external HDD with the usb ports?Gzus666yes, you can Thanks alot :)
Can you have an external HDD with the usb ports?Coolio_Poolioyes, but the PS3 will not read it as it's native HDD. so you won't be able to directly download to it. You will have to download to the internal drive, the copy/move the files to the external drive. a little more hassle but not a real big deal.
