From what I understand, PS3 supports SATA 3Gb/s interface, but the question is if 7200 rpm drives have any adverse effects on PS3 operation or overheating.

ive heard that it has. I just bought a seagate 2.5" 5400 rpm with 500gb and it works just as good as before. Even if you do get a 7200 rpm, it probably wont be that big of a difference. btw....500gb is the best thing thats ever happened to my ps3. I have every downloadable demo there is. several videos, trailers, about 400 songs.....still got PLENTY of space. Im lovin it.

edit: make sure its SATA. and i did the research. best buy had the best price for a 500gb. tigerdirect for 250gb. also tigerdirect for an external to back it up.

oh, and just in case you upgrade, this might help.... of course you need an external hdd to back it up and transfer your data. only problem is you need it in the format FAT32, which windows vista or just about anything else wont convert to. well, you can convert, but its a limit of 32 gb or something like that. the way to overcome that goddamn limit is to download a freeware program called swissknife. it only works on windows xp, so good luck with that, but thats the only way to get a harddrive ready to transfer large amounts of data. good luck.

edit:...but im not sure about apple computers. you might not have that problem with a mac.

I think this is a big misunderstanding.

Upgraded my drive, after running the back up took the new drive out of the antistatic bag and put it directly into my PS3. Turned it on got a message saying the drive needed to be formatted and confirmed the format it rebooted then ran the recovery process. There is no need to be concerned with formatting the drive before putting it in your PS3.

they have already tested hard drive speeds and there isnt enough performance increase with a 7200 over 5400. i have a 250gb 5400rpm seagate. best purchase i have made for my system.

i would recommend you buy a 5400 rpm hard drive.. 7200 does not really make that much of a difference.. instead of spending more on 7200.. pout that money into a 5400 and get a bigger hard drive.. Good Lock
