I'm planning on buying a PS3 soon (maybe today) and was wondering if I should shell out the extra cash for the extended warranty. Is the PS3 reliable enough that I won't need the extra few years of coverage?kapp1eh probably...depends how unlucky you think you are xD. There is about i think a 1% failure rate of the ps3 (probably closer to .3% to .5%) but if you unlucky like me and it fails on you, sony is great and sends u a new one very quickly with ease.
Like everyone else said, I think it is on personal opinion. If you feel you should get one then get it. I know some places, like best buy will prorate the amount back to you, if, say in a couple months, that you find yourself not wanting it anymore. But it depends on if you want it or not. If you read in the manual of the PS2, it does say not to keep it in an enclosed and dust free area, too. So if you arae keeping it in a entertainment center, behind glass, beware.......maybe the extendeed warrenty will be helpful.

Not rumours. BS.
My ps3 bricked after 8-9 months, after I left it on for about three days in a row. It was well ventillated, and the reason it was on was because you have to set it to accept incoming connections from the psp over the internet if you want to be able to connect in this way.
So after about the third day, I noticed I could not connect. This was on the middle of a week, so not a lot of time to play ps3, but I liked being able to stream my songs and pics to work.
Anyway... I went home that night and saw that the ps3 was frozen. That was the last time it worked. I reset it and it never came back on again, even after calling tech support and following all their steps.
The thing I didn't like is having to send all my wires, plus controller, plus HDD with it.
Anyway, my understanding is the extended warranty picks up AFTER the one year from Sony.
One thing that works at kmart, and maybe other places... You can call customer support and tell them you bought the warranty back when you bought the system, but you didn't do so at the same exact time - that you did it within a day or two after that. They will register you as a courtesy one time only for either one or two year extended, whatever you say you had.
The only reason I know this is because I really did buy it, but they had no way to look it up even though I had the system serial number - to in order to serve me, they will do it on good faith, one time.
Anyway.... That was all a little off topic, but goes to my honest experience.
So far, both my 360 and ps3 have bricked. Both are well ventillated. The 360 froze slightly more, and more frequently toward the end, and the ps3 just bricked all at once. Both lasted about 8-9 months after launch.
BUT. I don't know anyone else whose ps3 has failed, while EVERYONE I know who has had a 360, theirs failed at least once.
BUT... the 360, at least all you have to do is send the console - at least you dont lost your game saves (as long as the HDD is ok)
