...which is Heavy Rain. Wife and I started playing last night...and all I can say is wow. This is the type of game that I view as truly next gen. Graphics are amazing. Gameplay is new and fresh. The story is awesome. And it feels like I'm actually playing through a movie.

Pretty much every game I've played thus far has felt "more of the same", but with prettier textures. Heavy Rain is different from the ground up.

Can't wait to finish it, and maybe play through it a couple more times to see what kind of endings I can get.

Hopefully they'll make a Heavy Rain 2...or maybe even a movie based on the game :)

It's current gen now. Why you would expect "next gen" games then is beyond me.

Because I've been waiting to play a "Next Gen" game since the release of the new consoles..and I've only just now played what I consider a "Next Gen" game. Everything else for the most part has been the same 'ol same 'ol with some extra pixels thrown in.

When I first played the demo, I was intrigued by the game mechanics, and cinematic style. But I didn't expect the full game to have geninue action scenes that could rival more traditional action games. Fight scenes, or scenes where the characters must deal with danger are actually quite immersive and exciting to experience.

I would be very interested in more games taking this gameplay approach, but applying it to different genres. Of course it wouldn't be for everyone, but I would certainly buy the game...provided it's as well made as Heavy Rain.

While I really enjoyed Heavy Rain, the gameplay while immersive, only seems slightly improved over Fahrenheit (Indigo Phrophecy) from last gen.

Play Indigo Prophecy. IMO, it's superior to Heavy Rain in every way besides visuals. If not for a rushed ending it would have been perfect. Heavy Rain isn't that original if you consider that it was derived from Indigo Prophecy. Still a great game though. Don't know if I would say it's the only TRUE next gen game but definitely a great experience.

I never bought Heavy Rain. Played the demo, realised the gameplay was entirely made up of quick-time-events, then never bought the game. Seriously, QTEs are the worst invention in the games industry since the Virtualboy, why would I want to play a game made entirely of them? Just to see the story play out? If the only choice for interaction with something is QTEs, just cut out the middleman and make a movie.

The game is advertised as an interactive movie for a reason. Yes, it's composed largely of QTEs, but there is more to the game than that. I won't spoil anything for anyone who hasn't played it, but there are more than it's share of wildly intense, blood pumping moments that require reflexes quick enough to pull of the sequences. And consequences as a result of succeeding or failing at those events. Heavy Rain is a very unique game that provides an experience that is completely different for each individual that plays it. And simply put, there's no way they could project that kind of experience onto a movie.

I think LA Noir will be the first "true next-gen" title since its the only title that's doing anything overwhelmingly new. Everything Heavy Rain did was done last gen with not as impressive graphics.

Overwhelmingly new? I disagree. New features and technology, yes. Not a new approach to a game in general though.

Its a new approach to game development in general. One of the only stand out innovations this generation. Heavy Rain is part of a fresh, unique approach to how a game can be played, but it started last gen. So, it can't be considered the first shot at "next gen," now can it?

I agree 100%. So many of the games that come out these days are carbon copies of eachother. Heavy rain was unlike anything I have ever played. I wish there were more developers out there like Quantic Dream. Developers that are willing to take risks rather then just creating something they know will sell.

Well I don't see Heavy Rain or L.A. Noire being anything revolutionary. Heavy Rain was done before, but in the forms of games like Indigo Prophecy and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. Not to say it's bad, but after playing the demo I can honestly say I would not pay full price for it since it just seemed rather boring. L.A. Noire looks fun, but again, nothing overly revolutionary. I'd say Bioshock is more of a new gen (idk why we're using that term several years into a consoles life but whatever) game because of it's overall feel as a grander game than anything on the last gen systems (though I may just have thought this because it's based on Ayn Rand's writings, which are rather great).

Plus, The Last Guardian is hopefully going to be the best current gen game. It simply looks like it is on the same level of greatness that Shadow of the Colossus is on.

I completely disagree. The story is terrible and a perfect example of how a professional would never write. Red herrings and bull is not how you move a well written story along. The animations range from good to terrible to completely insane (there are a few times you can notice really odd things). The style of Gameplay was already done in Indigo Prophecy (and I guess you can also say many adventure games on the PC). Horrible acting and characters. No real choices. Insane leaps in logic. The story and endings aren't effected by what should be important choices (like Norman taking his drug or not). All of the endings can be gotten by replaying the last 20 minutes unless you let Norman or Madison die for some reason.

LA Noire should be how a professional studio delivers a movie like experience with good writers. Not a sexist, lazy, racist, hack like David Cage.

I wouldn't say "next-gen", in fact the only game I would say that truly felt next-gen would be Uncharted 2, just because of how amazing the graphics are compared to any other PS3 game.

I recently bought Heavy Rain and finished it, I loved the game. I have read that they will not make a Heavy Rain 2 but I read that Quantic Dream it working on another game that will be based around emotion.

Heavy Rain was good but i enjoyed indigo prophecy a great deal more. Also Heavy Rain really plays just how indigo prophecy did so i really wouldnt say that its the only true next gen game when They made one just like it last gen. If you havent played it TC you should, i would personally love to see it redone with the Heavy Rain engine.

To each their own I suppose...we just happen to be on opposite ends of the spectrum on Heavy Rain. I am loving the story, which is sort of new for me, since most games story lines I just completely ignore. Now, I'm completely engrossed in all the characters and the plot, much like I would be with a movie or TV series I would normally watch.

The gameplay probably isn't for everyone, but so far myself and my wife are loving it.

POPEYE1716

Hows that?

What seperates video games from other mediums? It's the audience's control over the content. Games that try too hard to be like movies rob players of control. It's a video game trying to be another form of media instead of playing to it's own strengths. I dislike the directions a lot of games are taking this gen. they try to be overly cinematic at the cost of good gameplay.

P.S. I'm the kind of guy that gets ticked off in Batman Arkham asylum when batman has to stop and walk to listen to Oracle on his ear piece. Gets in the way of my gameplay for no good reason

P.P.S. I suppose that the most "next gen"things I've played so far are the creation aspects of the LittleBigPlanet games and Modnation Racers. The depth in those creation modes is completely imposible on past gen tech

well like anyone who has seen the nangover 1, and went to see the hangover 2, everyone says, yep, more of the same.

obviously if you played fahrehheit (I have) heavy rain wont seem like anything new. Its hard to relive a first experience or impression.

I still however got totally sucked into it and just forgot about everything else, It is just like a movie, and hardly any games do that for me.

It is quite an impressive structure the game is based on however it is not the first time it has appeared in a game. Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit 911 used this format long before heavy rain.
It's deffinately a good game to run through if you like Heavy Rain

Cool story, I guess. Heavy Rain interests me as much as a slap in the face (that's just me, though, I don't mind people loving the game). That's weird though, usually I try most PS3 games, but this one, the more I look at it (reviews, gameplay vids, etc.), the less interesting it gets.

Still, this thread is blog material.

while the game did introduce a number of interesting elements, and the way it allowed you to craft the story was unique, it would have been nice if there had been some GAMEPLAY in the game... and no, I don't count the QTE sequences as gameplay, that just seemed like a way to make sure you were still awake

I found Heavy Rain an interesting change of pace, gameplay wise, but the story was terrible. This article sums up many of the thoughts I had while playing through it.

I don't understand why some people call certain games 'Next Gen' games because they are not, they're current generation games even if they're awesome.
