HELP!!!!

Bought a new Onkyo 605 amp mainly so that I can get TRUE HD & DTS HD from my PS3 but I must be stupid as I cannot get it to work!!!

If I set my PS3 to output in PCM Linear then my amp just shows it is recieving a PCM signal and if I set my PS3 to output in Bitstream then my amp only shows it is recieving Dolby D or DTS (NOT the HD versions)...I am using a 1.3 HDMI cable from PS3 to amp and then from amp to TV....

Which is the correct way, what is the best way to set the sound up and should my amp n ot show it is getting a Dolby True HD signal???

Going mad....

You are in the wrong place for this. I am not going to spend anytime explaining lossless audio but I will point out 2 sad facts for you.

1)PS3 HDMI port is not True HDMI 1.3a. That is right the chip which I can not remember the name can not Bitstream the advanced codecs. The PS3 basically will decode all high def audio into PCM so you will not see your receiver light up DTS HD MA exc.

2) The 605 is not an amp. It is a receiver. Make sure your set your PS3 to PCM.Unless afirmware updateever comes allowing the PS3 to bitstream the advanced codecs allthe PS3 will do is send the cores when using bitstream. DTS@1.5mb DD @ 640//768kbps exc.

Btw, PCM rocks and often you'll find it is the best choice anyway. (300 PCM seems more dynamic then Dolby True HD.)

Dolby HD is compressed after all, pcm is the original uncompressed source.

Thank you for this information, it kind of confirms what I have since found out....

Just one other thing, am I right in saying that the PS3 will chose the highest quality itself when it send the sound to my reciever? So it will always convert and send the highest quality avaliable?

At this point, the PS3 cannot send Dolby TrueHD or DTS MA as bitstream audio, due to the limited 1.3 HDMI compliance of the system a previous poster noted. The PS3 can, however, decode Dolby TrueHD and send it to the receiver as uncompressed PCM, but at this point cannot decode or utilize the full DTS MA track in any way (it can only play back the core audio from that codec).

For right now, the best option is a receiver that accepts LPCM over HDMIand let the PS3 decode the audio to the best available option. A side note: I would recommend going into the audio output options on the PS3 and manually deselecting any 7.1 audio output options unless you have a 7.1 setup, otherwise you're just sending 7.1 channels of audio and trusting your receiver to either remix (unlikely) or drop 2 channels of audio.

Audiophiles are praying DTS and Sony will work together to add in onboard PS3 decoding of the full DTS MA soundtrack soon. Not so much that it will outperform the uncompressed audio option some Blu-Ray discs offer, but that many discs (expecially those from FOX) offer no other HD audio options.

For what it's worth, my PS3 is hooked up via HDMI to a Sony STR-DG1000 receiver with a 5.1 setup and some respectable but overall underwhelming speakers and it's pretty amazing. The stereo imaging offered by these lossless codecs is impossible to describe and has to be experienced.

Enjoy your 605!
