My PS3 has recently died and thanks to the kindness of the playstation careline they are sending me out a replacement system, but before they collect my broken system I would like to do a backup of all the data on the hard drive.

Does anybody know if it is possible to take the hard drive out of my broken PS3 and put it into my friends PS3 to perform the backup of all the data and then format it?

And if it is possible will his PS3 be totally unaffected once I replace his hard drive and boot it back up?

Thanks!

It sound like it would work and not affect your friends PS3. But i'm no expert so don't go on my word. P.S when i had my PS3 replaced i just copied all my game saved data to memory sticks/cards as the rest i could easily get again.

Nope, it wont work. You will have to reformat your HDD when you put it in your friends PS3, meaning the data will be lost. As far as i know, there is no way in which to extract the data i'm afraid.

When my friend's PS3 got smashed they took in his PS3, transferred all of his data to the new PS3 and sent it back to him. So possibly, if you ask them to do it, they probably will.

When you say "took in" was it a transfer on the spot on his doorstep and sent the data back at a later date, or your friend actually took in his PS3 to someone. Because Sony dont, or haven't been giving people any of their data on replacement units.

Yeah, though it doesn't entirely matter i don't think. But yeah, just send the PS3 unit w/HDD back, cables, controllers etc you can keep.

If you cannot find a way to back it up now, or you didn't back it up before hand, then yes it'll be lost:(

You can take your HDD out of the PS3 and create an image backup on your PC by connecting it via a SATA cable...

this is what i learned from the 2.4 firmware update. always backup your save data. all you need is a memory stick or sd card. back it up every once in a while, especially before a firmware update. sometimes you have a file that corrupts the firmware and you have to reformat your hd for your ps3 to work.

unfortunately you cant access your hd files now that your ps3 is broken. the way sony formats the hds only lets the files be accessed by the same ps3. i hope that this doesnt happen to you again. i know what it's like. luckily 2.41 fixed eveything and i had all of my files left, but a broken ps3 is unfortunate.

um i dont think you can do that. like i said, the ps3 has a different file system. it would work if the ps3 hd file structure was ntfs, but sadly it isnt. i havent heard of anyone creating an image of the whole hd onto the comp before though. does that even work because the computer cannot access the ps3's hd file structure?

No you can't back it up from your PC I tried that one, all the data on the PS3 HDD is encrypted so your PC will not be able to read it.
