Does Sony manufacture it's own HDD for the PS3 like MS does for the 360, or can you put in any non-Sony brand HDD into the PS3?

Let me know if my question needs clarification.

I believe you can put in any 2'5 Labtop HDD. Or you can use an external hard drive.

Also, you have to make sure when you format the drive that it's formated with a certain format,
most the newer ones won't work. There should be instructions on how to
replace the drive in the manual

WARNING: Accrording to the v 1.0 manual it stated that you must reformat the existing PS3 drive to ever be able to reuse the current PS3 drive at a later date in your ps3. AKA-Unless you never want to use the old ps3 drive for your ps3 again, reformat it first (You will lose all your existing data). Disclaimer: I am not sure if this still holds true in later versions of the PS3 firmware.

From personal experience, all of my non-flash HDD (external) did not work and enternal sources cannot be used to save games on, but can be used to download movies, music, photos, and files not recognized by ps3 (these files are downloaded to removeable storage media by default ex: .pdf)

Kind of like the 360, you can use an
external when it works, but only for reading files like video and mp3, but no way to
use for anything else.

Also, do you know if you can move game saves to say a flash usb drive to backup when you install a new HDD?
