Hello!

I've encountered a problem with my PS3, I've never had any issues with it and it was working fine this morning. I hadn't touched it since, then just now when I switched it on there was no picture or sound on the TV. I checked the HDMI connection and it seemed fine, so I switched off the console, switched it back on again and still no picture or sound. So after rooting around for troubleshooting article on the interweb I reconnected it using the stock SCART cable it was supplied with, reset the console by holding down the power button for 10 seconds or whatever and it works fine. I tried to set it up for HDMI again but still, no picture or sound.

From this I came to the conclusion that the problem lies with the HDMI cable, however I'm a little paranoid of it being a more serious problem with the console, and I'd rather not have to purchase a new cable if I've got a perfectly decent one here.

I don't understand why this has suddenly happened. I've never had any problems with my console, and I'm always careful to switch it to standby before using the power switch at the back. I've got 40Gb console, with the HDD swapped out for a Western Digital 320Gb HDD, but I installed the new drive months ago and so far it has worked fine, so I can't imagine it being something to do with that. The HDMI cable that I was using I bought with the console from GAME, its GAME's own brand cable but again, its never caused me any problems until now.

To me it would seem that the issue is with the HDMI cable, as I said when I ran it through the SCART lead that came with the console it was fine.

Has anyone else had similar problems, and do I just need to buy a new HDMI cable? I hope its not a hardware problem with the console, that would upset me!

Thanks for any help,

Fletch x

you didn't happen to take your PS3 to someones house that had a TV with 1080p and forget to switch it back to 1080i when you got home did you? I did that and ran into that issue but when I did the reset it picked it back up for the HDMI ..... so probably not the case here.. any other HDMI devices at home? cable box?

hdmi can sometimes have handshake issues with the way it talks to your tv. I don't want to get into the techno jargin. So here is what you do to fix it, you nned to unplug your tv from the wall for 2mins, this will reset the hdmi highdefinition content protection or (HDCP) system. this you should also do the same for your ps3, after 2mins your setup should work.

Cool, I'll try unplugging both the console and the TV and seeing if that helps.

Not sure how this is relevant, but when I switch the console on, in the corner of the TV screen it comes up with '1080i\60' as it changes resolution. Now the last game I had in (which is still in the disk drive) is Far Cry 2, which runs in 780p. When I got frustrated that there was no picture and resorting to pad mashing to make something happen, I repeatedly pressed the X button, which would have started the game. When I did so in the corner of the screen it said '780p' as it changed resolution again.

This confused me, as it implied there was still some communication between the TV and PS3 via the HDMI cable, but there was still no picture or sound.

Wooo! I just did what you said, turning the console and the TV off at the mains for a couple of minutes and it worked! Yeah!

Thanks for the help!
