There's no such thing as a perference since no tv does both unless you have a 1080p tv. A 1080i tv is only 1080i, sure it can support 720p, but it has to convert it to 1080i for the screen. And 720p tvs are 720p only, sometimes 768p. Sure those too will support 1080i, but it has to be downscaled to 720p.

So remember, just because say a 32inch HD LCD (for example), says it supports both 720p and 1080i doesn't mean it displays those. There is a big difference between support and display. In this case a 32inch LCD often has a resolution of 1366*768, slightly above 720p, so it can show 720p. But in no way can it ever show 1920 pixels across that 1080i would need.

Just look at it this way, ED TVs that are 852*480 (480p) also say they support 720p and 1080i too.

I don't know if it's possible for them to fix that problem since there is no hardware resolution scaler in the PS3.  Therefore, it would have to be done in software which would mean some sort of patch for all those games, some kind of bios update, and a performance drop since the processor would need to handle the scaling.

I dont even see the issue in this because on my hdtv (Sanyo 26in) the picture looks better and cleaner on 720p rather than 1080i.

Smoother in 720p, yes, but the picture quality is noticeably better in 1080i. Check out Fight Night Round 3...looks beautiful at the selection screen when you can see all the character details in 1080i, but plays much better in 720p. Either resolution is a tossup. The only truly superior format is 1080p...which I really wish I had : (

An ordinary TV works fine.  BUT -- games are now designed with the hi-definition resolutions in mind so things like text will be smaller and harder to read on a standard TV.  In terms of performance, it will work fine.

i have a 1080i tv that for some odd reason, doesn't support 720p....but another does so i played fall of man on my 1080i only with a resolution of 480p then up on the 720p tv... all i can say is its A HUGE difference. never played fom on the 1080i only tv again...well, until oblivion, which, rumor has it and ign says, it will support 1080i.

Thanks brother, spread the word. I HATE when people ask this question. Because the answer is always the same (pretty much what TimothyB said).
