I have been comparing the quality of 1920x1080 pictures on my computer and my PS3 hooked up to the same monitor. The pictures on my PC are much more smooth and realistic looking. The same pictures on my PS3 look horrible. I dont know the words to describe it. Think of the difference between a photo developed at a shop and a photo printed on regular white paper from a regular printer. Or think of one of those effects you might apply to a picture in photoshop that makes the picture look almost cartoonish. Its not horrendous, just a step down.

Im using the PS3 Slim and I didnt notice this with my fat version which I sold, because I dont normally view photos on my PS3. Can anyone verify this problem I am having? Please do not give me any suggestions before you try it out for yourself. I am certain its not any of my PS3 settings. I have turned off Full RGB and all those picture settings.

I know how to describe it now. The pictures on the PS3 arent as sharp and the colors look faded, like a magazine print compared to an original.

Full rgb should be on,as without it pictures and anything not blu-ray will not use the full rgb color gamut, hence your problem(assuming you are on hdmi).

its off by default. im pretty sure i read somewhere that you should only turn it on if your tv/monitor supports it.

i turned full RGB on and that doesnt make the picture quality better.

Yeah, but not all of us can afford high end gaming PCs with $1000 graphics cards.

can someone with a 1080p+ monitor please conduct this test? and no, you can have the oldest graphics card on earth and the picture quality wont differ.

I've decent monitor (supports true 1080p) with HDMI input and Ithe PS3 quality is miles better than a PC connected via DSUB (VGA connector) and comparable with a PC via DVI connector.

maybe your monitor doesnt support home consoles too well. It was probably designed more in mind for a PC

Why is this even being questioned? Your comparing two completely different systems. Obviosly, the PC is going to produce a much higher video quality than what the PS3 could ever reproduce. It's like trying to dicuss why the Xbox has a better picture quality over the PS2, but he Xbox has more effecient, powefual hardware. Now, if you were comparing two PS3s or something to affect, I could understand this.

EDIT: I play my PS3 on a monitor and the picture quality isn't great either compared to my PC. So, it's not just so you. That's just how it looks.

This should be in SW. As for TC the thing is that not all PC's are created equal.

that's the problem with many console-only gamers. they think PC requires $1000 graphics cards, when an $80 Geforce 8800GT is about 2.5x faster than the PS3 graphics chip. Please don't say ignorant things like that. I own a PS3 fat, yes the picture quality is not as good as PC, if you have a problem with that, play on PC.

half the people here have no clue what theyre talking about or what theyre commenting about. please just take the time to read my post before you drop a comment. ive only gotten 1 helpful answer so far.

fyi, you dont need a $1000 video card to view a damn 1920x1080 PICTURE. a damn picture. there isnt even a video card that costs $1000. im not even talking about gaming resolutions or textures. its already obvious a PC version of a game will have better graphics than the console version. we dont need the obvious stated.

im simply stating that a picture viewed on my PS3 doesnt look as sharp as it does viewed on my PC on the same monitor. a PICTURE, not a video or game.

I have not tried your test, but i will comment. You mentioned that your fat PS3 had better picture quality. That is exactly how i feel. I traded in my 60 gig ps3 for a Slim, and now i suspect my Slim picture quality is not as sharp or clear as my old fat PS3. I notice a subtle lack of detail in blu ray movies and games. They dont pop like they use too, and i dont think it is my imagination..

you people that are saying the Slim's Picture quality isn't as good as the fats are delusional lol. I have an 80gig Fat and a Slim they picture quality is the same and I've tried on a 52" Samsung 1080p. No difference with HDMI, RGB FULL, AND SUPERWHITE ON. I don't know what you are experiencing... maybe try a different cable or ditch the monitor and get another one or a LCDTV.

I have a question to the TC. What method did you use to transfer the pictures to the PS3? I'm not hear to agree or disagree about whether or not the same picture has a different quality on the two different systems. I just want to know if the way you transferred the picture the the PS3 was different than the way you put it on the PC. Were both off the same thumb drive? Did you upload the pics off a camera onto your PC then transfer it some other way to the PS3? Could it have been down graded during this process because the PS3 lacks the same software the the PC has or would search for on it's own? Just curious?

It was the very first thing i noticed when i turned on my slim. I put in Iron Man blu ray and it just did not "pop" like i remembered. So i compared it to my 60 gig and the picture quality was pretty apparent even to my brother. So i tried a couple of other movies with the same results. It was also apparent with Wipeout...it is just like the detail or black level is toned down...not as sharp.... skin tones not as good and more grain seems visable...oh, its hard to explain....but when my brother who does not care about this stuff noticed the difference, i knew it was not just my imagination. Is it a big deal to me...not really. Its just a observation and these differences are very subtle.

For the record, the video being output from the ps3 is from a geforce 7800 gtx equivalent nvidia gpu, through a dvi-d digital video link,so the only difference you will see,is in how sonys xmb software is programmed to display said image. So smart comments about pc's superior image quality are profoundly retarted in this discussion.lol.

then adjust your TVsettings. turn up the color lv ect.And not every TV supports RGB full. a lot ofsets will give you black crush. Also what res is your monitor useing? PC monitors can out put much higher res than HDtv's. also it maybe a case of your Monitor is just a better set than your TV.

so you have a 60gig and a Slim at the moment? if you do, try comparing high res photos. im assuming its harder to compare a video.

and to everyone else, i highly doubt any advice you give will help. ive tried every settings on my PS3 and monitor. i set the resolution of my PC and PS3 both to 1920x1080. if any of you guys hook your PS3 and PC up to the same monitor, just compare a damn picture and report back please.

you make an interesting point but i dont now how that would work. i downloded the picture off the web on my PC and transferred it over using a USB drive. a file is a file and no matter how many times you transfer it, its not going to lose quality. unless youre asking me if i uploaded the picture to the web and downloaded it on my PS3, which i didnt.

can you try this for yourself?

Then I must do something right ! because I use a monitor too and to be honest it is the best PS3 screen I have ever seen and way better compared to my PC screen, it is a new laptop by the way, my friend just bought a new PC with GT230 Nvidia graphic card with a decent monitor and my screen still looks better. I use a HP monitor "HP 2309m" HDMI connection with full RGB and Y Pb/Cr and I am telling you it looks shocking good.
