The playstation 3 will last the 10 years Sony has promised. The playstation 1 lasted December 4 1994 to March 23rd 2006. Playstation 2 lasted October 26th 2000 - June 10 2011 (technically is still going with 5/6 games still to come in 2011)

So both PS1 & PS2 lasted 11 years. Playstation 3 November 11 2006- June 10 2011 (still going strong...) 4.5ish years and counting. Sony has just admitted that they are just starting to begin working on Playstation 4. The very earliest stage of development of PS4. So 3 years is the soonest that PS4 could hit the market. October/November/December 2014 Playstation 4 is released.

7 and one half years Playstation 3 has been on the market when PS4 hits. So PS3 will last at least 11 years on the market. So 3.5-4.5 more years of the PS3.

It is safe to say that Playstation 3 has a least 4 more years left to go in it's life span.

Woah, you sound certain, I personally would like to see more PS3 years, others will obviously disagree.

There are currently no possible hardware advancements to be made that would warrant calling a console the "PlayStation 4," and there won't be for some time.

The days of a new generation of consoles popping up nearly twice in a decade are over, and for good. Even if a new machine were to arrive in 2014, I seriously doubt that it would THAT far ahead of the PS3.

I agree. Aside from graphical updates and more storage, what are they going to improve on? Probably nothing too major...

the only new console coming out in 2012 is the new nintendo console that was shown during nintendo's e3 press conference, thats it. no ps4 in 2012 and no new xbox in 2012. i don't know why everybody keeps thinking theres a ps4 releasing in 2012 when sony never even announced a ps4 and if you read this article sony says that the console they said they are working on isn't the ps4, its the the successor to the psp (Playstation Vita)

I read exactly the same news, Sony have had a very successful E3 this year with the NGP and that TV for PS3, MAYBE they'll stick to their 10 year PS3 plan. Just a thought.

Maybe, but Sony will release a PS4 by 2014 at the latest. Four years more would be a LONG time to go without another console, not that I have a problem with that - it's just by then Microsoft and Nintendo will both have their consoles out and Sony would be left in the dust.

I'm aware of this. I was thinking more towards an announcement in 2012 with a 2013 launch. Thats still completely in realm of possibility. Do you seriously believe that sony isn't working on a PS4? They say they're not rushing it. that doesn't mean its not in development.
