How long do you think the ps3 will live if you play it atleast 5 hours every single day? Will it live for over 5 years? Or will you have to buy a new one every single year?:|

Its to early to tell, but from the reliability of the consoles right now, you probably won't have to replace it every year... *cough* unlike another console *cough*

I run folding@home for 2 hours every single day while I get ready for  work, and the reliability of this console is outstanding. I just hope it holds up. I never really had problems with my PS2, so I hope it's the same with the PS3.

Little bit of an accident here, my friend. But I was playing Oblivion at some time early morning, probably 2:00AM or so, and I accidentally fell asleep with the PS3 on. I slept until around 3:00PM and I just clicked Circle to get out of my Invetory screen and I was playing the game like I was the previous night....

That was a month ago, and I haven't ran into a single problem. So baseed on this, I doubt I'll need to repair my PS3 for playing it at least 5 hours a day, which is part of my usual schedule.

why the HELL are you playing your ps3 5hrs a day every single day. DUDE! get a life.

5 hours, is that much? well i guess if you are some 12 year old kid. with a mom who's nagging you about Bed time and all that. but i have a 8 hour job, and then another 2 hour job on the side to make a littel extra money. and i can play 5 and more hours a day... the only problem i can see is getting up in the morning. but for me, who hangs out with my friends and my girlfriend, has two jobs. i can easly play 5+ hours and still get up in the morning.. YOU on the other hand should get a life instead of harassing people

The only thing wrong with Playstaions is usually  the laser, which can be replaced pretty easily. Saying 1 year life  is abit bs, you have to be unlucky to get a laser product that dies inside of its warranty period.

I'd wait till they have a few revisions to iron out the problems, like the 8th version of the PS3, then if theres any problems down the years there should

be plenty of aftermarket stuff thats better. Happened with the PS2, if theres something wrong poeple

like us will have a sad to poeple like you.

Five hours a day is not that much compared to how many people play more than five hours. I should know, I used to play about way too much. sometimes up to ten hours a day. This was all before I got into PC gaming and then had to split my time. Now, on average I get five hours on everything. Anyway, my point is five hours a day is just about average. Dont worry about it, your PS3 will not fail like that.

About the only parts of the PS3 we have to worry about are the two moving parts:  the Blu-ray drive and the fan(s).  Running Folding 24/7 shouldn't be a problem as long as the fans work.  As far as the Blu-ray drive I can't see it any less reliable than your typical Sony DVD player.  I've watched thousands of movies over seven years on my Sony DVD player and I expect the same from my PS3.

i had trouble with ps1 b/c i had it chiped so i can play copy games...but even so...my ps1 still works...and i got it 6 years ago...the problem with its is the lens...if i change it then it wont have any problems...so i think ps3 should last quite a long time...BUT if u use it to play games and watch Hd movies...like every day then i dont know...

I highly doubt that with the many problems the ps2 had. I have a 360, one year this June and i have not had a single problem with it. Fanboys need to stop, if you bought one you'll see how great a console it is. I'm not trying to spam here i'm just saying my opinion which i have a right to do. I have all 3 consoles and each has their high and low points.

I hate to inform you however 360 has worse promlems then PS2's DRE ...
and also just because you know how to  take care of your consoles dosn't mean everyone does ...

My PS1 is around 10 years old ... it STILL works perfectly ...
My PS2 is around 4 years 6 months old and it STILL works perfectly ...

I've had my DS for 9 months and had annoying touch screen problems but it dosn't gameplay so i dont mind ...

 I've had PS3 for 1 1/2 months -- no problems yet ...
Ill be getting a 360 this December - why did i wait --
  1) i want the Elite ... which is still 2 months away ...
  2) i don't want the hardware problems which plauge 360 to affect me ... ( since they WILL be fixed by December )

PS3 lifespan should be 10-15 years. If a PS1 can hold for 10 years, why can a PS3 hold on for 15?

Its to early to tell, but from the reliability of the consoles right now, you probably won't have to replace it every year... *cough* unlike another console *cough*

I usually don't respond to topics like this and I didn't want to go there but the "other system" has been faulty for 2 generations straight, that can't be good....but like they say 3 times is the charm.

if it keeps continuing like this rate, id imagine it would run for quite a while, sony really stepped up the pace on the ps3

side note, i had my ps3 running for 24 hours straight, on accident, 3pm to 3pm, still worked fine

My original PS2 lasted 5 yrs before it crapped out (DVD player). But how many CD/DVD players do you own that don't skip after 4-5 years? Not many last that long.

I've had my PS2 one year after its launch and it stopped playing games a few weeks ago. Opened it up, and blew all the dust out, cleaned the lens, and now it works again :DTelcharXI
Funny the same thing happened to me. I was playing GTA : SA want PS2 died. I was so sad, I almost cried! I opened the damn thing and saw an amazing show! My PS2 looked like a sheep! Dust everywhere! I clean it, cleaned the lens too. Put it back together and it's working perfectly.BTW, my PS2 has 5 years.

When you pay $600 dollars for a gaming platform than you know that it's going to be very good quality. My PS2 lasted like 6 years and as far as I know it's probably still running (last time I saw it was when I traded it in). I used to have an Xbox 360 and I would get problems with it at least once a week, mostly freezes and disc read errors for no reason at all. My PS3 has only frozen twice, both times I was on a 20 hour Oblivion marathon with my friend... And a lot of people leave their PS3s on almost 24/7 folding, and I haven't heard of any dead PS3s yet. I think they will live for a LONG ASS time. Pretty much all consoles do, go to a pawn shop and look at all the working NESes! How old are those things? Like, 20 or something? That's old.
