That would work, just don't cram it into a small space.

only time i've noticed my fan become pretty loud was when I had it enclosed in my media center with the glass door closed and only like 2 inches on each side for ventilation but it seems with a decent ammount of ventilation I hardly know its on especially when its idle I've left it on for days forgetting its on till i look at the lights and realize i left it on hehe.

I can't hear the fan in my PS3 at all, and I have been known to actively use it for 12 hours+ straight, not much else to do when you're up all night and the rest of the world is asleep. I don't sleep much.

I have a window open pretty much all the time though, so maybe the steady traffic noise outside drowns out the fan...but I definitely hear when my PC fans kick into high gear, so I dunno.

My PS3 is complely exposed, and the nearest wall to the vent is about 7 feet away. She purrs like a kitten when I boot her up, and I seldom if ever hear the fans kick into high gear.

The first time I heard it really kick in was the other night whilst playing a PS2 game. See what happens when there is no emotion engine chip inside.

Anyway this was after a few hours playing in a hot room.

I don't know that Sony will exchange it for just fan loudness. As long as the warranty is still good I'd call them and tell them it stopped reading disks, they will either have you send it in and send you a replacement, or they'll send you a replacement with a coffin for your 'dead' ps3. My fan is comletely silent, so I'd say that while you may not have a functional problem now, one is definitely on it's way with the fan going loud like that, could be the internals getting hot. My ps3 gets hot around the edges, but when you feel the middle of it on the front or back (or top/bottom if you don't have it on it's side) you shouldn't notice much heat being built up.

Folding takes up all available system resources, so it will make your PS3 run hotter, thus the fan will turn up.

I'm pretty sure it stepped down, although it was only when I was taking the disc out that I really noticed it being louder. I was switching it off at the time.

i have been experienceing this too...its strated a few weeks back. i really noticed it once i started playing tomb raider anniversary on it. the fans kick in pretty quick. im from the us and have launch unit. its gets pretty hot at the top of the system (if it were standing verticaly) and tends to run that way no matter what its doing.Granted i never turn on my air conditioner and live in tx, where the humidity is just terrible, so my apt. stays pretty warm. but i keep a small fan behind it to keep it cool with that though i dont think it really helps much despite it being a very powerful fan for its size. anywya im wondering if maybe i should try and return mine before something happens to it. i already have this one "box" thats has gone bunk on me. wouldnt want it to happen with this guy. oh and my system has nothing around other than a white "box". well actually i have pics of it in my profile but yeah..now im just ranting..

My PS3's fan doesn't go loud until about 4 hours of gaming and if it is to loud check the ventilation holes aren't cloged with dust.
