Ok my PS3 makes a popping or cracking sound (similar like when you pop your knuckles) and I belive it's from the plastic casing expanding and contracting. My question is, when it pops like that, does that mean it's getting too hot or is it still safe to play it?It useually starts doing that after about and hour or so and when i first got my PS3 it didn't make that sound (or maybe I just didn't notice it) and from what I've read this seems common, I just want to be certain.

I haven't heard much about that issue. Not sure if it's heat related though.

It's probably the hard drive, they make a faint crackling noise.

Funny thing is, if I stand it vertically, it doesn't seem to make that noise at all.

It's the plastic expanding, dont worry it's fine to keep playing even if it does that

My PS3 makes that "popping" sound as well. Sometime when I turn it on, a minute or so it "pop", but its done that since I got my PS3 early 2009. I think you couldn't worry about it to much. My PS3 works fine. *Knock on wood*

*cracks all knuckles* .... nope i've never heard my PS3 make a noise like that. like the other guys have said it's probably just the plastic expanding. try and put it in a more open area.

The reason for this is because most of the heat is created around the drive that will be at the highest point now and the heat can naturally rise out of the PS3 much easier. I have had my system standing vertical for a long time.

my 60gb pops like that right when i turn it on.sounds like the plastic expanding, after 2 seconds it quits and i have played it for hours with no problem.i have it vertical from day 1,because that was the general census and that is how sony promoted it,heat rises and vents are on top.
