a system as pweful as the ps3 i believe should have more supported video formats. im sick of having to convert my videos to mp4, mpeg4. at least have the big formats like AVI and, WMA. there should be an update for it.

You just want to use it to watch illegally owned downloaded moviez!

Just use TVersity for that. it uses the PC to play the file and transfers the output to the PS3 so it can play basicly anything save for that darn vode container wich is just a fraud.

Linux* and installing Linux to a PS3 is a little more than "just".

Tv versity is a program that runs on the background of youre PC and acts as a server.

Its for audio/video and pictures and you can browse the library from another PC or console like the PS3.
Instead of giving the raw file it makes the PC run it and forwards the video/audio result so anything the PC can play will display properly on the PS3

There is a reason why those formats/containers are not supported, they are proprietor, designed to be controlled where as MPEG is designed to be used by all. This is why it always pays to use more open formats.

btw PS3 supports DivX ( .avi ) files :P

SONY has been adding additional codecs to PS3 over time however you can't expect everything to be given to you in one day.

divx is enough and it is all the ps3 will ever need. wherever you get your videos from they can be converted to divx in no time.

get a program called dr.divx, it converts a 30min tv show to divx in 10mins or less and a full 2 hour movie to divx in about 45mins. it makes files very small but still has great quality. i managed to rip a dvd to my pc and convert it to divx and it takes up 500mb and the quality is perfect, not quite as good as the dvd but its only 500mb and can be saved to the hdd

Um... WMA is an audio format. As for WMV playback you can enable it in the System Settings, and DIvX and XviD AVIs already work on the PS3. Maybe someone needs to do a system update and try reading the online manual.

Just a note:

.avi files are just containers. What you need are the appropriate codecs. the PS3 supports DivX 5 and up, but not 3.11 (XviD).

TVersity really makes life simple, it requires a ton of router management and set up, but, the website has detailed instructions, once up, it just works, http://www.tversity.com/home if you wanna know where to find it, I use it, like I said, it's a major pain in the ass to set up with your wireless router, especially if you are properly firewalled, but, it's worth the time it takes to set it up, and you can find step by step videos on youtube, etc.
