I didn't play PS3 for a fewweeks, then I started my PS3 and updated it, and then I played Assasins Creed. The noise of the system was seriously increased! It was nearly as loud as my 360, and it really bothered me, so I turned the system off, let it cool for 20 minutes, then I turned it back on without putting in any disks, it was very quite for about 3-4 minutes, then it got louder (however, not as loud as the time I was playing AC). I tried playing some demos, then I quit back to the dashboard, went away for a few minutes, came back, the sound didnt get less and was still somewhat loud.

Does anyone know what causes this ? Because I have had my PS3 for nearly 2 years and It never made such loud noises, it was always quite. Now, it just sounds nearly as bad as a 360. I didnt get any freezing problems or problems with the system, its just the sound which is annoying.

Is the sound coming from the fan ? Because I'm 99% sure its not from the disk drive.

Thanks.

I think it's the fan that you're talking about. For some reason my PS3 increases in volume (hahaha) when I play Grand Theft Auto IV. If it was a hardware problem you would hear clicking or something like that. My PS3 is two years old and it's still ticking without any other problems than that. I wouldn't worry about it unless games start freezing a lot.

I guess so, but I really have no clue how this started. Even when I'm not playing games and basically not doing anything, the sound starts increasing after a few minutes. Then when I play a game like AC, it gets even louder than my computer. Should I do the "fan test" ? Is it safe?

Well it's probably just the fan working extra hard?

Maybe dust got into the machine? that could increase the speed at which the fan turns.

There might be a lot of dust clogging up the system.

there is a lot of dust in the ps3, even if you keep it clean and well ventilated. Try sucking the dust out with a hoover and see if it helps

No, I wouldn't do anything unless the system gets worse. It seems to be a common complaint among old 60GB owners.

Er....no. There's no dust in mine, and I keep it clean, and in a well ventilated, open area. No dust. ;)

you can try this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCI91xXOu4c if you read the comment someone posted this so obivously use at your own risk, but i've tried it and it seem fine. "The auto clean feature is 100% SAFE on the 40GB and 80GB core systems ONLY. Sony has said so. Some people cover the vents on the 20 GB, 60, and 80 GB metal gear solid bundle systems to force the fans to spin at the highest RPM to mimic the auto clean feature; that will overheat and damage your system. The 40 GB and 80GB core systems only have the auto clean feature. I do the fan test everyday on my 40 GB PS3 to show off to my friends."

Mine is really silent for the about the same time - 3-4 mins and then it gets much louder. I guess it is just the fan. But nothing to worry about yet becuase mine has done that everyday for about a year and it still works just fine.

leave it open, if there is any dust in it, it should blow it all out. And leave it the right way up.

Maybe? D= do not doubt yourself that is obviously the case. He didn't play the poor thing for weeks and it's been lonely :( it needs some loving from good ol' wolf since he obviously knows how to show his console love

I wish my 80GB PS3 had those smaller CPUs that the newer models have. Mine heats up my room (no joke. My room is small and the PS3 makes it ridiculously hot and uncomfortable)

Don't do anything TC. I've said it already. If all you're experiencing is a noise increase then just leave it. If you try to fix something that doesn't need fixing then you can make it worse. Mine makes noise too once awhile but that's all and it's been doing it for a year. It's still ticking, no problems.

I just re-located my PS3. I changed the stance from horizontal to vertical and put it in a MUCH more open area. Strange thing is that there was no difference and even got worse. I tried watching a Blu-ray movie, after 5 minutes it got a bit loud (which happens all the time now and im okay with) and then after 20 minutes it went crazy. Louder than a 360 (second time it has gotten this loud). I had to turn up the volume of my TV to hear the sound of the movie. This is ridiculous.
