The PS2's weak laser and awful video quality (even the revisions that enabled 480p playback didn't help much) made it a very "megalomart" grade option. And of course, with the lasers frying or otherwise rendering the PS2's unusable, Sony faced a massive class-action lawsuit for purposely designing the things so weakly, and then marketing a feature that ultimately rendered it useless.
As a preventative, I would suggest not playing BluRay movies on a PS3 for the same reason.

I dunno, with the PS2 that might ahve been true since it was primarily a games console, but Sony are trying to flog the PS3 off as a "Home Media Hub" so one might assume they have upped its movie playing abilities to a good standard
The PS3 is most definitely made to play BluRay movies and was reviewed to be one of the best players on the market.Velric
Agree

Seems like the crack is aplenty! There is a world of difference between the PS2 and the PS3.

Crack? Maybe...
The PS3 is a VERY capable Blu-ray player...
More better at Blu-Ray playback, than the 360 HD-DVD Add-on (I also have that)
The problem is, that when your playing movies a lot, it causes wear and tear on the Blu-Ray drive. So, were looking at some peoples drives failing within 2-3 years...
Then again, it might not fail, but constant wear and tear on the drive for movies (unlike games) WILL take its toll on the drive, but we dont know how much stress it can handle before it goes kaput.
The PS3 appears to be better built than the launch PS2s in regard to just about everything. The drive will wear out faster because of the extra use of playing blu-ray movies, but that's true with any electronics.GIJames248not really, bluray drives read at a cnostant rate instead of faster on different parts of the discs like dvd, so bluray puts way lees strain than dvd does on say 360 or ps2.

*cough cough what do you know cough cough* Did you invent the PS3 ?

Obviously the PS3 is capable of playing Blu-Ray movies and for what it's worth it seems to be quite a "Good" player at that. I think only time will tell how durable the BR drives in the PS3 are. As a few people have said, the DVD drive in the PS2 turned out to be pretty weak leading to failures for various reasons, one of which being frequent playback of DVD movies. Other have also rightly pointed out though that Sony built the PS3 from the ground up as a multimedia hub, so hopefully the BR drive in the PS3 is of better relative quality than the DVD drive in the PS2 was. I think there is some truth in what both sides are saying but you can be almost sure to count on this: No matter how good the BR drive in the PS3 is, it will be more likely to fail sooner for a user who is playing games and frequently watching BR movies than for the user who simply plays games. That's just a fact of life, the more you use a product, the more wear and tear you put on it, the quicker it will fail.Bleach_is_basic
Exactly only time will tell how durable it is. The first PS did not have problems right away then the laser went bad. I remeber I had to flip mines upside down for it to work then it died. I had to replace it at least 3 times. The PS2 also had a problem with the laser but this problem did not occur right away so only time will tell.
The problem is that when playing a BluRay movie the laser is reading/streaming constantly for 1.5-2 hrs vs. sporadic reading when playing games. As with all electronics/lasers/etc. things wear out and will eventually fail... the real issue is that we don't know what the life of the laser is.. 3, 6, 15, 30 years? Who knows... I guess time will tell.
Just my 2c
Wow that sounds like a lie to me.
I still have my launch PS2 and it has worked flawlessly for games and DVDs.

i still have my launch Xbox yet people say they had problems. I had 3 PS1 but skipped the PS2 but I know many people that had at least 3 of them.
Then why did Sony call their system( HOME INTERTAINMENT) so that people can watch movies and do different stuff with it.SolidSnake2020It's called MARKETING. MARKETING != ENGINEERING.
Bad things happen when you let marketers design stuff. Or did you conveniently forget about Intel's Netburst?
Or did you also forget how the cheapest BluRay drive for a computer still retails for $700 by itself, AND the cheapest stand-alone (I've seen) is still a solid $1000? There's some serious cost-cutting voodoo being done with the PS3, and experience dictates it's in places where one would not normally cut corners on.
i watched like 14 blu-ray movies on it its awsome :D and why would sony put a blu-ray if it cant run a movie lol ?FadixonNobody said it can't run a movie. But what IS being asked is just how "quality" that BluRay movie support and playback will be.
Meanwhile, history does lead to the conclusion that the PS3 (as a BluRay player) is going to be a faulty piece of **** in two years or so, and it's likely there will be yet another class action suit.
Another thing to consider is that even though this "dude" works for Sony, he does have some incentive to tell you this. Seeing as how you're already in a Sony store and have shown interest in both the PS3 and Blu-Ray it makes sense that he'd try to sell you the PS3 and then also a stand alone player for movies. I'm pretty sure those guys make some kind of commission.some dude from the sony store told me not to play bleu-ray movies with the ps3...he told me it's not recommended , just like the first few ps2 were not recommended to play dvd's ... is this true .. or is this dude on Crack?

i never had problems with my ps2 and i bought it 5 years ago and I play dvds constantly, maybe you have bad luck
about the ps3, it was made for blu-ray, it's the basis of sony's strategy to win this format war, and it seems to be working very well
AHAHAHAH are you guys kidding me???? There is no difference between the laser reading a blu ray disc for a movie or a game. Its the same laser!!!!!!!!!! THEY ARE BOTH BLU RAY DISCS!!! all the laser knows is this is a blu ray disc and im gonna read the info off it for my proc to decide what to do with it. The laser doesnt know if its a game or a move cause they are both on blu ray. Same thing with the PS2 THE GAMES WERE ON DVD !!!!!!! i had my PS2 from open day till last year and all i used it for was dvd movies and there was no problem with it what so ever.

hows the quality? its already been reviewde as one of the best blu ray players out there quality wise.

I try not to pay attention to whiny minimum wage earners. If you check blu ray performance reviews, the PS3 is top rated even over dedicated $1000+ units. And it's the only one out with hdmi 1.3.

What he is referring to is when reading a movie the drive (laser) is on 100% of the time vs. the drive (laser) is on less than 100% of the time playing games.
Just a rule of thumb that if you use something more it wears out faster.
But hey, if you bought something to use it...then use it. Play games, watch movies, etc.

Of course, if you use it more it will wear faster, that's the same with everything. If they made it correctly though it should last for the entire PS3 life cycle easy.
And he's right, we bought to use it, I certainly won't stop from doing what I want

Hi! I use it for DVD's, Games, my music and Blu-ray. The PS3 was designed to be your home entertainment hub. Don't worry about people saying the drive will wear out. That's just BS, I have a Sony Walkman CD player that is at least 20 years old that still works, my Laserdisc player still works and is at least 15 years old maybe more, and a jukebox CD player that is at least 10 years old. (need to get all my CD's into mp3 so I can ditch the beast :) It's just a luck thing if the drive craps out, but drive technology is pretty solid overal. I wouldn't worry about it. Secondly PS3 is one of the best Blu-ray players on the market and from what I know it is still the only one to support HDMI 1.3.
