Im thinking about getting a PS3 this weekend. I have a 720P(Native) Widescreen CRT HDTV and was wondering if: A) Will the PS3 Games play in 720P and, B) will Blue-Ray movies play in 720P? The reason I ask is becuase I have heard that the PS3 downscales 1080P titles to 480P if you dont have the right TV. Please clarify. Thanks.
Most native 720p HDTV support 1080i output. Blue-ray will downscale the resolution to 1080i. I doubt your TV doesn't support it but if it's the case then yes, the PS3 doesn't support 720p output for movies (for now) so you'll see them in 480p
The 3 looks fantastic on 720p, particularly in games like MotorStorm. Play it on a regular TV and then an HDTV in quick succession. It gives you that goofy, involuntary, "Wow" grin that you can't manage to wipe off of your face. It looks awesome.
A 720p HDTV is fine with the PS3. That's what I have. 720p stuff just gets sent as 720p and your HDTV handles that fine. 1080p stuff gets converted to 1080i and your HDTV should accept that and convert to 720p to display.
It works wonderfully in both 720p and 1080i. GT HD Concept v2 does have some scaring effects when running at 1080i, but nothing your unable to ignore. IMO it looks alot softer in 1080i then in 720p, though when playing fastmoving games you should realy play them in 720p. SLow moving games like RPG's, strategy etc can look better in 1080i.
