Yeah well I made the stupid mistake what any amateur gamer should not do, is putting your machine on the carpet. Obviously its not recommended for the sake of dust entering through the fans and static. I played my Playstation 3 slim on the carpet for about an hour an a half. It was a bit hotter obviously since the heat was being insulated. Do you think the PS3 slime will be okay or should I be concerned?

It will be fine don't get paranoid. Just remember to keep it elevated so that heat can escape, the hardware is meant to withstand great amount of heat.

Not a wise decision, but I wouldn't call the console coroner just yet. Just don't do it again, in fact you want to keep all heat generating electronics off of surfaces like a carpet. Put it on like a shoebox or something if you have nowhere to put it.

It's ok. Just don't keep it there and make it a habit. If it has to be on the floor, get a big hard cover book of some kind or anything that can resemble a hard flat surface.

What he said. Not only do you have to worry about dust but carpet would act more like an insulator. It would drastically increase the temperature of the playstaion.

Just put it on a flat surface next time.

Just buy a short small table for it. It's not good to have your PS3 on the floor/carpet... The dust may destroy your system...

Just make sure not to do it again, and put it on a desk :)

It's not as fragile as an egg or something. If you put it on the carpet for months and months or maybe if you play for 30 hours straight it will damage it. Just put it on a table or a few big books or something next time.

I don't think an hour and a half is going to do much damage. Probably sucked in a month's worth of dust and carpet fibers, but they're designed to last longer than a month :D Take a small hand vacuum (like is says in the instructions) and go over the vents. You can probably suck some of it back out.

An hour won't matter, but don't leave it there. Never keep ANY console on carpet. EVER. It says so in every single console manual since the NES. Carpet absorbs and holds the heat from the console which will cause it to overheat and break. No exceptions.

If you are smart you will take your PS3 off the carpet. At the very least, put it on top of a DVD case or hardcover book or something that won't absorb so much heat.

problem is the carpet will keep the heat and make the PS3 more hot, and there may be some fine fibers getting so hot they'll burn and produce gases noxious to the PS3 and you

Thanks guys for the replies :) Greatly. Well, after realization hit me to not do what I did, I checked the back, and it didn't look dusty inside. My carpet is rather clean actually. The PS3 still looks completely new. I was scared for static and dust going in the fan, along with the heat. I don't keep it in my room (which is why it was on the carpet), it stays in the den on top of a wooden stand next to the flat screen TV. I guess I was being paranoid but at the same time I rarely get anything like a Playstation 3 anymore since I have College, and other finances.

Another concern that I'll bring up. I actually smelled the back of the PS3 slim, and I smelled a faint hardware smell coming from the back. I dont know if thats normal after playing the PS3. Hopefully it is. It was mild, and the PS3 wasn't burning up, but it was quiet warm. an hour and a half might have doubled for being on the carpet

Just get a can of compressed air, and blow out any dust / carpet fibers that may have gotten in. You'll be fine. If you don't have a table to put it on, go to a local store, and get a plastic milk crate to keep it off the floor.

The static buildup from the carpet to the plastic casing is like rubbing a balloon on your hair.

Sooo will the casing help protect the components inside? I hope it is not too serious. It is a hardy machine after all  I need too stop being paranoid. Find a happy place, find a happy place! *Runs in the corner, sucks on thumb*

Meh. It was just a hour and a half. Worse things have happened to PS3's, and now you know better. ;)
