I have a monitor with DVI, VGA, and component. It says that it supports up to 720p so I'm guessing that I could do Hdmi to Dvi for the 720p(if it works. Would it?). However I would like to know how to get sound. I have speakers built into my monitor and would like to know how to get it working with me only having the component cables in.
Thanks

Im afraid this isnt much help since I cant see what you are talking about but since no one else has answered I'll say it anyway. I hdmi hook up has an automatic setup so its possible it will work and may be worth a try. Im not sure what u mean with the audio but if your saying your going to use the red and white cables for audio and are asking if you can use hdmi for video and component for audio, it will work. But i will worn you although your screen will show 720 computer screens are not ment for this type of video and the contrast will not look very good or atleast not as good as a 720 hdtv. I have my playstation hooked up to a hd computerscreen sometimes too when i want to watch tv aswell and i prefer my 19inch hdtv to my 22inch hd computer screen.

I don't know why you can't get sound out of your component cables if your monitor has speakers. Make sure in "audio options" on the PS3 you've checked the composite connection. It's possible to use HDMI for video, and then the composite for audio (that's the way I do it). But I run a split cable, y-shaped adapter (don't know what it's called) from the red and white composite ends (the PS3 audio out) which has a single female connector on the other end that I plug my computer speakers into. I'm tired and I don't know if this makes any sense, but I hope it helps. I spent quite a bit of time figuring it out myself.
