Hi all, I'm a huge MGS fan and looking forward for MGS4 and really interested in it's online features. Since I was never an "Online Gamer", I really hope to get some explanation about latency, ping and whatever effects online playing ..etc

Few questions:

- I was wondering how much "ms" do you guys get for your regular online gaming ? (if it's possible to know that with the PS3, I still didn't get mine, I will soon before 2008 though).

 - I've heard "ms" under 500 is good for online playing ? but what if someone's ms is 200 or 300+, while there are others on the server with ms less than 100, will they have a huge advantage over the person with 200 or 300+ ms ?

 - What about connections speed, what's the ideal speed to not get any lags and stuff ? 1mbps/256kbps enough ?

If there are any other factors that might effect online playing, please mention 'em.

Any help would be appreciated.

The lower the better,I don't know about PS3 but on the PC 170 or less is ideal. if you start to go too high like 250 or more the game will start to pause for a swecond or two at a time...very choppy and not very smooth.

Gamers often refer to latency by the term ping, which measures round-trip network communication delays (by the use of ICMP packets). For example, a player on a DSL connection with a 50 ms "ping" will be able to react faster to game events than a modem user with 350 ms average latency. Another popular complaint is packet loss and choke, which can render a player unable to "register" their actions with the server. In first-person shooters, this problem usually manifests itself in the problem of bullets appearing to hit the enemy, but the enemy taking no damage. Note that the player's connection is not the only factor; the entire network path to the server is relevant, and some servers are slower than others. While latency is frequently complained about, many players believe a lack of finesse and decent tactics is more damaging than a slow connection in most games. Major and frequent variations in latency, however, can be another story; these can make it very difficult to properly play the game.

Lag: When people have lag, they are jumpy around the game alot. You'll notice them in game compared to somone who is not 'lagging'. Laggy players ruin the game and offten reduce the speed, pace, smoothness of the game for everyone

Ping: Low ping = no lag. Some games use colour to determine ping. Green is great, yellow or somtimes orange is normal (may may not experience lag) and RED which means the game is a unstable piece of $hit

Latency is the same as ping...lower is better, dont get confused

LAG IS BAD

LOW PING = ACE!

1.The average miliseconds depends on where the server is and the technology you are using (as well as time based factors) 2. Under 100ms is the recomended ping for playing online. You should easily be able to reach that to any local server on DSL or CABLE but if you also use wifi from your PS3 you could add upto 50ms to your ping which of course causes issues. 3. Idealy you want 2mbit down minimum and 512k up. That should provide plenty of bandwidth for most things, however if you plan on using Home alot then you'll need 3.5mbit down and as much up as you can get, minimum. Its important to note that ping is the time it takes a signal to get to the server and back, this isnt not related with lag which is seperate. Lag is when an error happens while a packet is being sent and its lost or broken, this means your end has to request the packet again which causes a pause while it waits. The larger your ping the worse a error can appear to be however if you use wifi the chances of lag skyrocket, along with your ping. If you want the best ping you can get, connect your PS3 with ethernet, turn off QoS if you can (either on the router or PC etc), and connect with Cable or the newer fibre tech.

I have a PS3 and play motorstorm and resistance online frequently.  After a few months they are still pretty much lag free.   I dont know the ping or latency but its pretty comparable to when I played half-life 2 on my PC with no lag due to my actual machine.  I think its pretty much the same with my PS3.   The main issue is you ISP, your PS3 wont be any different latency wise to a PC.  Connection speed wise i would say 1mb or better is ideal.  DSL, cable etc works fine and I use my Wifi connection too and have noticed no lag.

ms = millisecond = thousandth of a second.

You'll react at around 300ms. Around 100ms is good for online gaming, avoid 250ms+ like the plague.

basically. I would say its playable 300 plus, but its not good. Lag is bad, but when you get like 500 plus you will probably d/c. again, i would say anything below 200 is good
