My 8-year-old son wants a PS2 for Christmas. I bought one last week and have started wondering if I should have gone ahead and spent the money on a PS3. I don't know if he will truly appreciate the PS3 for a few more years - so, is it worth it to spend the money now or wait until he's a little older and buy whatever the newest version is at that time?Any advice will be greatly appreciated - especially since I only have a week left if I am going to exchange it! Thanks!

Just go for PS3 80 gig.

Great PS3 games coming out very soon, and great PS2 games already out that you can play on the 80 gig.

the PS3 does not have a lot of kid-friendly titles compared to the PS2, but if anyone older than 15 is also going to play on the console you are going to buy... then definitely get the PS3 instead. if you get the 80GB, you can get the PS2 kid-friendly games for your son while the older player(s) can play the PS3 games.

Personally, I would go with the 80gb PS3 because then he can play PS2 games, and get the new released PS3 games coming out next year.

A PS2 should be fine for an Eight-year-old. Currently the PS2 has the largest selection of games for a younger gamer, and cheaper prices then the current generation games.

The PS3 will still be the newest console from Sony 2 years from now (the expected lifespan was quoted as 10 years from the launch date and it's probably no less than 5). There's also no indication of a new Xbox in the foreseeable future. If the PS3 is in your budget then by all means get it; he should be able to enjoy it for many years. Also note; the games for PS3 are about $60 vs. most games for PS2 @ $25-$40. Good luck in your decision.

BTW I hadn't thought of it before, but being that he is so young I would probably recommend a Nintendo Wii instead. The Wii has more age appropriate titles, and traditionally the majority of Nintendo's library has been "kid safe". More sophisticated consoles like PS3 and XBox 360 have many more titles geared toward mature audiences. The only problem will be finding one, you'll have to act fast, as they are and will continue to be scarce this holiday season.

I say wait, only because a lot of the good games that need to be appriciated are for people who are more mature. The PS2 has a great library, and you can get the games for fairly cheap. But another way to look at is buy a 80 gig and this way you can play PS2 games on it to.

It depends on what you let your Kid play. My cousin's 8 and I let him play on my PS3 (as long as I'm monitoring him so he doesn't break it :P ). But I really don't think an 8 year old can tell the difference between a PS3 game and a PS2 game. I remember when I was a kid, I didn't really care about graphical quality until I was about 13-14 and got into computers and tech. Unless you yourself will use it for the blue-ray player, I definitely think sticking with a PS2 (which is what? $150 now?) until the next-gen or 5 years from now half-way through this generation when he's 13.

I think that even if you got a PS3, your kid would be more interested in the PS2 library... Just because it'll be easier to find something interesting in due to the large library (and cheaper games for your pocket :P ).

Just a side note: He may find PS3 games a little on the hardside hard. I say this with games like Motorstorm in mind that I can see a young boy find somewhat interesting (I actually can't think of anything else that would be somewhat simple for a kid that young besides R&C. I remember I always just watched my brother play back in those days because I really got frustrated at the games )

For an 8 year old, I think the ps3 can be a bit much. I have both ps2 and ps3 and I have taken my ps2 to my church and let younger children and teenagers play it. They love it, the game selection is massive, when he gets older, you can upgrade :)

Grab PS2 and GTA3.. well, not really GTA3

about the only big kid-friendly game I see coming is LBP and maybe some PS3 downloads. Overall I'd say get PS2. But if you are interested in play as well, then go with PS3 80G and get some ps2 games for your kid :D

well the PS3 60 GB is now only 399$ which is great. However games for PS3 are usually adult oriented. There are only a few rated-E games. I would recomend a Nintendo DS or a Gamecube or a Wii. All of these have great games for an 8 year old that can still be fun for adults.

Hoped this was helpful.

A way to look at this is if you get a PS3 then not only can he enjoy the system but it could be a family entertainment system as well with all the features it has. Also there are a few nice games that young kids can enjoy that can be downloaded from PSN. There was a 9 year old visiting here one day and he had a blast with Grand Turismo that was a free download.
